My hometown is one of these red areas, I haven’t been back in almost a decade and I don’t plan on returning any time soon. I disagree that they’re harmless; hate crimes against queer people have only gone up in the past few years. It can happen anywhere, but it’s way more likely to happen in one of these red areas.
I say what I said because it’s true: Most are just ignorant morons. That is to say, they might be persuaded by the right candidate. OFC there are still some dangerous piles of shit. There are dangerous piles of shit everywhere. Just because the dangerous pile of shit might be the sheriff in these places does not make these places unreachable or worthy of a “no-go” status.
