I’ve never really torrented on linux idk can I just add it to steam and run with proton?

    If its a loose folder of game files yeah you just add it as a non steam game and set the proton to run it with. Most games should kinda just work I did that with the need for speed series but some require protontricks to install some missing dependencies which should be within the game files. Although most of the games i get are abandonware so no experience of modern pirated stuff on the deck specifically

    I have also done it this way for installer files. Added as a non steam game then launch and install. Once installed i change the same non steam games properties to the exe of the game to launch. I do this mostly because i generally have bad experiences with lutris although heroic tends to be fine

      This is hilarious to me, because on my Linux box, I have never once gotten “non-steam game” to work using Steam, but Lutris works like fuckin’ magic.

            The most common experience I have trying to run games through wine, lutris, bottles, and half the time on steam, is I click the run program button and nothing happens. Literally zero feedback. Some methods get a microsecond of loading cursor. Anything where a program has to alter or update a directory is maddening. Like I got touhou 7 running through steam pretty easily but no chance of figuring out how to apply the English patch.

            The one that finally made me boot windows again was project diablo 2. I actually got bottles to run the installer over its internal folder for diablo 2 and ran it once a year ago, but trying to do it again with recent version, I just couldn’t trick bottles into running it again.

              Yep! I have the same thing happen all the time. I end up eventually figuring out a weird list of steps that work at least half the time, some of which are probably nothing but superstition and make no logical sense, but I do them every time because that specific list of steps is the only thing I know works and screwing one up can and has made it completely fail without feedback. And if it doesn’t work, I’ll try again, after a few repeats I’ll reboot the whole system - because sometimes for Omnissiah knows why, that fixes it. That’s a common Thing To Do on Windows, that isn’t supposed to be necessary or even do any good on Linux, and yet.

              I swear, Linux makes me feel like a fucking WH40K tech priest, and not in a good way. But Winblows makes me feel like the guy asking for tech support who the AdMech consider dirt on their tank tracks, so.

                I find Linux frictionless as long as you stick to the programs in your “store” but beyond that it’s a total crapshoot. Sometimes you google it and immediately find a command you can paste into the terminal to do exactly what you needed… Sometimes you spent 45 minutes setting something up only to click go and nothing at all happens.

                What distro are you using?

                  I’m running Mint. It mostly happens with video games made for Winblows running through Lutris, and usually gets worse/most unpredictable when mods and user generated content are involved. I’ve accepted that those kinds of factors are going to break shit. I’m not in the midst of trying to sort out any one issue - though it’s good to know I can just kvetch about any given Linux problem on Hexbear and a helpful bear will try to find out what exactly is going on (that’s what it usually means on the Internet when someone asks what distro I’m running) - I just wanted to rant.

    You need to install a game first. You can use a program like Lutris or Heroic to do that first and add to Steam from there. It depends on the game mostly. I run Bazzite on a PC and I’ve gotten Doom Eternal to work perfectly, a portable version of Assetto Rally working with texture issues, and some FORZA games just don’t want to install at all.

    It’s a fun process of trial and error, best of luck with it. Maybe look into the games you want to do first and see how simple they are to install, games with Denuvo workarounds may be trickier since the solutions are so OS specific. But anything that’s just a GOG exe or has been repacked nicely could Just Work

      Just as a warning with both launchers, to use their built-in install aids (install scripts) you need to log in with your respective accounts.

      Then they will try to download the file directly via your account.

      I don’t know how to bypass that.

      So basically if you use Lutris, you won’t be able to use their install scripts and will have to install the game manually.

      Or am I mistaken in that?

          Have you tried it recently? The download scripts in my experience require you to log in.

          For some games that I own, the install scripts have been tweaked so as not to require you to log in.

            It’s been 6 months since I installed AoE3. But trying “Search the Lutris website for installers” right now it seems to work fine. Maybe there are others where it is the case?

            Edit: On further thought, do you not mean login into lutris but rather into e.g. steam when a specific script is made for steam?

              Yes sorry for the ambiguity: I meant that lutris requires you to log in through them to the platform of choice (in my case GOG).

                  So two things

                  1. This is relatively “new.” I think they implemented this a few years ago. I used to like using the methods of old where you could use LUtris and not have to log in.

                  2. On the topic of this post of sailing the high seas, then this makes it difficult does it not to use Lutris and its install scripts?

    Torrent with a vpn on like you would do anywhere else. I use qbittorrent. If you download a repack, it’s pretty easy to install it with lutris. Fitgirl repacks want to install on S:\ by default which is how proton sees your linux filesystem, just tell them to install on C:\ to keep them contained in the fake little windows filesystem proton makes for them to live in.
