On Monday August 17th 2026 I toured the Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), along with 6 other members of a group called ‘Community Not Cameras’, to get a better understanding of how the surveillance cameras located around the city, worked and how the data these cameras collect is stored and used.
I went in hoping to be reassured, but left with far more concerns about the many ways the extremely minimal security measures put in place to restrict data from the cities surveillance systems could be circumvented.
At times the meeting was tense, and I’ll explain what caused one of the SPD employees to suddenly stomp out of the room, twice.
