In 1995 Parton began her Imagination Library project, which sent an age-appropriate book to every child in the county every month until they were five. “My father could not read and write, and I saw how crippling that could be,” she explained. It expanded nationwide in 2000, internationally in 2006, and nearly 25m books are now distributed each year across the US, Canada, Australia, the UK and Ireland.[…] Parton explained that as well as improving child literacy, “it’s the fact they get recognised. They get this little book with their little name on it in the mail, and they feel special. They start taking pride in themselves, and they know that somebody out there is thinking of [them].”

May she rest in peace doggirl-tears

I don’t know enough other country to certify this take as citations-needed

However, Willie Nelson/Dolly Parton/Johnny Cash style country is clearly lost for cosplay and reactionary thought.

I’m sure Baudrillard would have something to say about this. Same thing regarding socialist thought. Being pro-Palestine and anti-War were pretty much standard sentiments for leftists in the early 2000s. Now, if you’re a klanner on race relations but claim to be for a 2 state solution, you’re considered pretty much a revolutionary.

          Highly recommend Devil Makes Three

          Good example: Never Learn

          Other bangers:

          Poison Trees

          Sweeping

          Tow

          Beneath the Piano

          The Bullet

          The Plank

St James Infermary (live sped up cover)

Is devil makes three country? I’ve read people calling them bluegrass, folk, and even rock. Which is whatever, they fucking rule.

I think much of their songs fall into the broader Outlaw Country genre, but yes bluegrass, folk, and yes a bit of rock. Also I have pet Pete Bernhard and I swear he is like a secret Maoist or something. Very cool dude. The ones I listed definitely have some very country bluegrass twang and bluegrass itself is sort of country subgenre.

But yes they are one of if not my favorite band of all time. A hell of a lot of class consciousness and marxist-adjacent critique of cops, landlords, even imperialism.

For example Poison Trees is a very clear critique of the entire institution of US policing and civil rights struggles, Never Learn is less clear but has obvious anti-landlord/enclosure of the commons/exploitation themes with a clear understanding that if we could unite we could bring the entire global economy to a halt to make our demands impossible to ignore.

              Sweeping is just outright anti-imperialist.

And as for country, Beneath the Piano is possibly one of the most country songs of all time.

*Edit: LMAO met not pet, but that is too funny a typo so I’m leaving it.
