Hey, I need to update my monitor and would like some recommendations. The PC I’m using are used both for work and gaming. Should I go for a 2560x1440 or a 1080p monitor if I want to target 120ish refresh rate?
The games I mostly play are Elite Dangerous, Microsoft Flight Simulator as well as BG3 and older titles
The demands I have for the monitor is low latency, high refresh rate, around 27 in size.
HW specs:
Radeon RX 6700
16 GB RAM
Ryzen 5 3600
The RAM and CPU is being upgraded around Christmas.

I recommend a 21:9 ultrawide, in either 1080 or 1440. Elite Dangerous is absolutely immersive on an ultrawide. Used to play ED on a 55 inch tv, but I will not go back to 16:9 after I got my ultrawide for work, which replaced dual monitors. Ultrawides are great for productivity as well, found myself being much more efficient on one long monitor rather than two. Would love to try a 32:9 super ultra wide someday, but they are just too damn expensive. Right now I have just a generic LG 32” 21:9 panel that’s only 60hz and a 6700xt, and play everything from factorio to starfield with no issues. That being said, my kids have a 27in 1080p 16:9 120hz panel, and it’s so buttery smooth, I’m saving up for that 120 refresh rate.
How are you so much more efficient on one larger monitor vs. 2 combined? What sort of work benefits so much from such a seemingly irrelevant change?
I have no clue! It’s just a feeling. I think because of the lack of bezels and since it’s more like 1.75 monitors instead of 2, there is enough screen real estate for multiple windows, but I feel like I don’t have to move my mouse as far to go between them, if that makes any sense.
That genre is mind-blowing in VR. Have you considered an hp reverb and a cheap monitor instead?
I’ve been trying out an Oculus first gen but my computer space are quite limited so the sensors kept getting either knocked out of alignment or seemed to “lose” me as I turned my head, so I’ve resigned to use monitors for when I need to move around.
I’ve used the headset for things like demo reels and such where you only need to turn your head rather than use controls, since that happens rarely enough that I don’t mind going through the sensor setup each time
If I were you, I’d look into something like the HP Reverb G2 that has inside-out tracking (no external cameras or lighthouses). The immersion you get with VR is way beyond anything you can get from a screen.
My full setup a Vive Pro 2 with a VKB HOSAS setup and a YawVR 2, and it feels spectacular, though getting interdicted the first time almost made me piss myself.
If you want a 1440p non ultrawidde go for either Asus VG27QAL1A, Dell S2722DGM or Gigabyte M27Q-P. The 2nd one is a VA panel which will be your best budget option and if you don’t care about response time being slower than IPS then it can look better in non competitive games and the 3rd being cheaper ips option
I prefer to have more room for stuff, so especially for work I would choose a higher resolution.
I’m using a 3440x1440 120hz with a Radeon 6600 xt and it’s amazing. I will actually never go back to 1080p (atleast not for my main moniter). I get pretty decent frame rate, above 60 for all of my games which does include some triple a titles. Can’t recommend it enough
I have a 1440p 2k monitor. It is a quirky resolution.
If 27", I would go with 1080p, after that I would go 4k.
