Paying to remove ads is still paying them for implementing ads.

Ads are not the only way to monetize something. There are a few options which I would find agreeable. The first one would be selling it. You pay for access. There is no version in which has ads and the only way to use it is to pay for it. Another method would be to sell more advanced features or some form of usability. Maybe you can only view 1000 videos a month for free, but have to pay for more.

Whatever the method may be, ads are not the only way and unfortunately paying to remove ads just causes more ads to be implemented in things because you are rewarding them for doing it.

Paying to remove ads and paying for access are essentially the same thing right? They have to monetize it in some way. Ads are going to implemented whether people pay or not. At least now you have a choice whether you pay with your data or money.

They aren’t the same thing. With ads the monetization strategy is to implement ads to annoy the user into paying. Then finally paying for it is letting them know that they succeeded in implementing ads in a way that got you to give them money. You are thus incentivizing an ad driven internet.

Paying for access is paying for the service because you think it is good enough to spend money on. This is incentivizing the development of a good service.

Data harvesting another matter entirely. TikTok is going to harvest the data of paying customers and free customers regardless.

The thing is, the vast majority of websites exclusively have an ad tier and the vast majority of internet users will tolerate any amount of ads because they’re not going to pay for these services.

Paying for access is paying for the service because you think it is good enough to spend money on.

if I pay for a subscription to TikTok then I obviously think that it is good enough to spend money on. And it’s not like there’s any guarantee paying is going to improve a service. Netflix started off with no ads and look where it’s at. You have to pay for ads and they keep increasing subscription costs.

Obviously. I predicted this on Mastodon months ago when they started adding ads right in the middle of videos.

Piss people off and they’ll pay to disable ads. There’s nothing that competes with TikTok right now.

Charge people to go ad-free. Keep increasing the sub price over time, then provide a lower cost version with minimal ads.

Tiktok and YouTube are my only sources of entertainment. I’m okay paying for both.

Especially since both allow for anyone to upload as much as they want without limits or fees. Hosting that much data isn’t cheap.

Obviously the FOSS users will downvote me, as they believe everything should be free and unlimited.

And Lemmy users think everything should be free, without ads, like bandwidth and storage are free.

But I’m glad being fine with paying for my entertainment is defeatist. Go back to your torrents, poor boy.

Agreed. Some people have this moronic attitude that everything comes for free.

Lol, I thought we were going to have a serious discussion about the relative merits of advertising vs community servers with donations, turns out you’re just an elitist cunt. Probably my mistake for not seeing the “TikTok and YouTube are my only sources of entertainment” red flag!

How is it a red flag to view content on two of the biggest websites?

The fact that they’re your whole life is the problem. You’ll understand when you grow up.
