Hi,

I’m looking for a pair or reasonable sounding budget over ears for out and about and that won’t be loved as much as my others. Ideally with a removable mic or very easily modded.

I’ve had a look at…

Mackie MC-100 - Anyone heard these, I’d need to mod them too. ATH-M20x JLabs Studio Pro - Not quite sure on how good these would sound. Rane RH-1 -(possible Mackie Clones)

I like balanced/mid forward bright headphones like the AKG K702, AKG K257, Grado SR80x (I know the ones above won’t get close but more of an idea of what I’m chasing for cheap “beaters”.

Cheers

Update - I ended up getting a good price on the Mackie MC-100. Got them and successfully modded them to take a 3.5mm removable cable. For the price I think theyr’re pretty good. Light but seem solid enough, time will tell. Earpads are a bit shallow though. Not much after market options for square 100m x 80mm pads though.

Soundwise I really like them. Not too much bass but definitely there. Soundstage is narrow but the imaging/instrument separation is great.

Sony MDR-7506 are the classic beater headphone – I’ve had mine for like 12 years and have beat the stuffing out of them and the only thing I’ve had to do is replace the earpads because the pleather was flaking. No mic, though. I wish Sony would do ones with a removable cable so you could slap a mic cable on them.

Cooler Master MH751, they’re based on the takstar pro 82 and generally regarded as pretty decent for the price.

About £60 max but I’m also considering just skipping cheap headphones to be abused and trying the K361s.

I did also look at the Koss 42iK but thought the headband looked a bit flimsy.

      Cheers

The k361s are good but they are durable. The hinge breaks all the time. Maybe get the Beyerdynamic dt770 second hand?

Yeah, the hinge is a worry. Had considered the superlux DT clones as it’s less if a loss if I ruin them trying to do the cable mod.
