They adopted “alt” right because they didn’t like the sound of “extreme” right.
Call them what they are, fascists.
To be honest “Nazi” works just as well, and it’s easier to spell.
The problem that I have with the word Nazi isn’t that it isn’t accurate but that it allows them to argue that they aren’t members of the Nazi party and are therefore not Nazis. I think it’s important when you’re arguing this point to be accurate and not allow room for that pedantic argument. They will never address your point if they can address the word you’re using.

I have also inferred a nutty political ideology, but the article specifically states the police have given no motive.
Per this CBC article, police have described it as “a hate-motivated incident related to gender expression and gender identity.”
