Why would I update all the time? There is no easy way to go back, and I never encountered an appleTV update which improved performance. Since the original. I use the my Apple TV device to stream. Apple always wants more. The “last” updates on older devices always the worst. Once fine, they struggle to run. Oh, time to throw it out. Legacy support? Oh too expensive… Open the hardware for devices out of support…Oh wee can’t do that. Most of us are stuck to some degree in the “ecosystem” in 2023. Where is the “focus” upgrade to have apple leave us alone, till we feel like risking an upgrade?

    1. Security updates are a good thing

    2. New stuff is always being rolled out. New revised codecs, changes to networking, support for new and improved technologies.

    3. Improved code, fixes to issues (we all know software issues are part and parcel with modern life).

    4. New features, like new HomeKit stuff, FaceTime, and more.

I just went from 16.1 to 17 a couple weeks ago. You don’t have to update if you do t want to. Turn off auto updates.

I still have an AppleTV third generation from 2012 or whenever it was that is still connected to a tv and has never been updated.

I have turned off auto updates since 2007. The curent version on mine (last HD model I think) nags every day: an update is available. It acutally disconnects my devices to tell me this. One wrong click on the remote…and now I have yet more “choices” from on high.

I admire the borg spirit here. Some day you will look back and think, why can’t I play the piano? Because your bandwidth was occupied in other, far less healthy mysteries.

How dare I complain about constant intertuption? Or mention Apple is a filthy company when it comes to waste. It’s true my HD model is still working. That only leaves the millions of the perfectly nice little ones, which streamed great from my laptops to join millons of laptops and ipads in the landfills, when their only problem is they are not powerful enough to extract enough money from users.

I have a bad attitude for a fanbois party, I admit. Unfortunatley I’ve made Apple much money over the years, through my clients, which is truly depressing, shameful hypocrisy I refuse to deny.

    Enjoy Sonoma!
