“8gb is comparable to 16gb on Windows”
yeah until the swap memory kills the SSD
Do you think the accountants/finance peeps ever did analysis/market research on if they sold MacBooks at competitive pricing compared to windows laptops? I bet they’d drastically increase their Mac market share if just once they sold their MacBook lineup at fair rates. Been on my mind since 2008
Don’t they say OS makes a huge difference here? I mean idk but if chrome uses 4 gb of ram on my windows but only 2 gb for the same tasks on mac, then raw amount of ram is a moot point. Apps can be optimised different on different OS.
Would love to see some real world tests instead of some arbitrary numbers especially with pro workflows involving PS, Painter, 3D software etc
Basically, the only company on the planet with healthy margins on consumer computers is Apple.
I apologize in advance for having an unpopular opinion, but it’s not that Apple is “overcharging” for RAM and Storage, they just have healthy margins while every other company has unhealthy margins. But, because most other companies have raced to the bottom, Apple looks unreasonable. I’m not defending Apple’s prices, I’m saying the problem is actually with the other companies pricing their products too low for their own good.
I’d argue that the other companies can’t offer anything of value to compete with each other, so their only option is to compete on price. Apple doesn’t have to play that game to sell their products because they have plenty of other things that differentiate them so their prices are actually the “normal” prices that we should be seeing everywhere if the other companies were competing on anything other than price.
Do I wish Apple’s prices were lower, yes I’d love that and I would upgrade more often!
Do I think they are being unreasonable and greedy, no they’re running a healthy business that pays people well, invests a lot of money in future innovation, and puts money away for a rainy day.
There is a positive for keeping memory low and that is to keep software lean
And everyone on this sub said 8gb is enough for a MacBook Air M1
I mean it really depends on your use case. My wife has an M1 Air with 8GB and it’s fine for her needs. For me not so much.
A lot of people being held at gun point to buy 8GB models of MacBooks
Some people just want a MacBook Air with a better screen and more ports and they are willing to pay a premium for it. That’s all there is to it.
Can you remind me what the problem is?
Sadly I’m planning to switch back to PC for my next purchase because while I adore MacOS, I find the expense, limitations and planned obsolescence of the hardware to be really detestable. I have a MacBook Pro now which would be fully capable of running Sonoma, but Apple blocks it from doing so. It doesn’t even get security updates anymore, so now I guess I should just… throw it away? It’s insane.
The shenanigans about overpriced RAM and their ridiculous claim that Macs need less RAM than PCs, what a ridiculous pile of BS.
Apple has always sold a minimum spec system that always underperformed. This isn’t new. They continued to sell Macs with HDDs instead of SSDs which had huge impacts on entry level performance.
It’s what I call the device for a buyer that know not what they need but just want a label.
I rarely comparison shop for an Apple product within the lineup based upon “minor specs”; I typically shop for what I need vs what’s the cheapest way to get a new system. Effectively as a Mac user of at least 25 years - the sting of the bottom tier never impacted me - as I would have never considered a system with the bare minimum.
Apple as well as every OEM, charge premiums on things like incremental storage and ram. Apple charges a bit more than other manufacturers sure - but in the end; compare the complete system to another complete system - other than Apple’s bottom tier - they are closer in price to others than I think most would admit. And sure it’s a difficult comparison nowadays because it’s Intel/AMD + NVIDIA vs Apples M-series SoC.
We need more windows options with 15+ hrs battery life and haptic touchpads. Also if I could use imessage on Windows that would be great and I’d never ever consider an apple laptop.
I wish people will stop buying these, even for 2 years. Apple keeps doing this because people keep buying them. Apple prices are just off the charts. It’s obscene greed, and they are just laughing in the boardroom at people buying these things.
That’s what I love about capitalism…if you think a product costs too much, you can go buy something else from the competition. So instead of getting upset about the cost of RAM at Apple, just go buy a PC brand and be happy.
Yeah this, most people are going to shocked, annoyed, outraged and betrayed then walk in and but it anyways. Tell Apple this is not ok by not buying it for christ sake.
I just bought an M2 MBA for work. With my budget (which I don’t control), I had to choose between not having enough RAM or not having enough storage. I chose to slim way down on what I have on the laptop rather than sacrifice memory, since I can use USB storage if I really need to.
But the real question I have is why I had to make the choice at all. 16GB is the absolute minimum I can accept because I need to run a Windows VM (which now takes up 10% of my hard drive) fairly frequently. Nothing should be sold with 8GB. I should have been able to get the 512GB storage and the 16GB memory for what I paid.
In unrelated news, this is my first Air since they went to the new design.
Do not like.
The tapered edges of all previous versions of the Air made it really easy to slip into a bag with a bunch of papers or whatever; now it gets stuck on things like a Windows laptop.
