Hello everyone. Long time lurker. First post in this sub.

I have 2 2017 4K boxes and just got a 2022 4K box. I’m running into an issue on two of the three TVs where Dolby Vision and HDR modes look blown out on the Home Screen. The default opinion here is to set it to SDR with match Range and Frame Rate set to ON.

The problem I’m running into, are apps that don’t support the feature. Apps like YouTube TV, Peacock, Fox Sports, Max, etc… What’s the general consensus of how to deal with this? Turn on HDR with a blown out Home Screen in order to watch football, then turn it off when done? Seems like a less than stellar setup.

My setups are:

58” Samsung TU700D, blown out HDR, no DV

55” Vizio M55-F0, displays everything perfectly

43” Vizio M43Q6-J04, blown out HDR and DV

Thanks in advance.

Normally, I’d say set for SDR and set to match.

But I thought, until this post, that all the apps that didn’t support it were only SDR.

In the past I’ve definitely had HBO match for me, but I can’t think of the last thing I watched with the new Max app. I don’t use the other apps you mentioned (YouTube once in a long while).

On all my 4K AppleTVs, YouTube doesn’t like Dynamic Range matching. It allows Frame Rate though, so I disable Range matching when using YouTube.

Peacock is my biggest frustration. A lot of 24fps content, and the judder is noticable. I end up manually changing frame rate and then needing to change it back. Their support is unfortunately worhtless when trying to request for a fix for this.

For HDR, yes, enable manually as needed and then change back. I think Fox Sports pulled HDR support entirely from Apple TV several months ago for some reason (4K content is listed as “UHD” instead of “HDR” as it is on Roku), and it does seem to support frame rate matching.

I wish the app makers would just use the standard Apple API. The apps you listed are the ones that have non-standard UI that means not all standard features are fully implemented. I’m actually surprised Apple allows this.

One more for the list: Prime. Supposedly TNF games are in 4K HDR, but it’s definitely not switching.

YouTube tv and Max both support matching, so not sure why you’re seeing otherwise. Peacock doesn’t, fox sports … can’t recall.

But yes, it should be set to 4k sdr for the best experience, with matching on.

Just to confirm your recommendation: when you say “matching on” do you mean “match dynamic range” and “match frame rate” set to on? And then format should be “4K SDR”?

I primarily have the latest higher end Samsung TVs last 2 years so I’m sure they support everything and I am using proper 4k HDMI cables. I primarily will use YouTube TV and AppleTV+ . I just want to make sure I am using the recommended settings (at least as a starting point).
