I have just done the last update on my watch and while I was at first very excited about the new feature measuring how much time one has spent in daylight, I quickly realize that as winter approaches, I will be wearing jackets with the sleeves covering my wrists and thus my watch.
What do you people plan to do about this? Just not care and cover the watch or will you keep it exposed to the sun (and the cold)?
I feel like it’s not very accurate anyways. I walked around outside for an hour yesterday in short sleeves and it logged 18 minutes.
I wondered the same thing, since I have been wearing a hoodie a good bit recently…
In the Health section on it, it states “When unobstructed, Apple Watch can automatically record an estimated amount of Time in Daylight in Health,” (emphasis mine), so I suspect we are not going to get very good reading during the winter months even if we’re outdoors…
can automatically record an estimated amount of Time in Daylight in Health,”
My guess is that it uses GPS information combined with the weather information to get an estimate. I haven’t really done any measurements to check accuracy. But I have exclusively been wearing long sleeves for at least two months now and so far it seems OK.
I wear my watch over the outermost layer of clothing. Sometimes, I need to use a band extension, but it’s worth it.
Easy solution, I don’t need a watch to tell me how much time I have spent outside 😂 I am outside as much as I can/want/need.
Another useless feature is the handwashing detection and timer. I turned that shit off right away.
Ah yes haha that one was more annoying than useful.
Sure, I was doing fine going outside before the update and I still will, but now they claim they can give me this info and I want to know how accurate it can be, that’s all.
Well lucky for me I winter in Mexico instead of Canada 😝
Living on a tropical island, so no action time for me here 😅
It’s fine for me, I have a hairband on the middle of the cuff of my sleeve and then it’s the cuff is folded back (so it looks like it’s halved)
I don’t understand the question. Just wear it as a watch? I’ve had a series 4 on my wrist 23 hours per day for 5 years.
I didn‘t hear about this feature, can anyone tell me where I can find this?
In the health app, under the mental wellbeing section. Only if you are on the lastest OS though.
thank you
I couldn’t care less about how much time Apple thinks I spend in daylight. I know, that’s all that matters.
If it’s unobstructed it registers sunlight for me. If I wear sleeves it doesn’t.
😆 Yeah, in Canada here, during fall/winter I have sleeves covering my wrists even indoors.
S6’s iPhone app: Settings > Privacy > Time in Daylight.
Ambient light sensor in your Apple Watch estimates how much time you spend outdoors in daylight. Apple Watch SE (2nd gen) and Series 6 or later. https://support.apple.com/guide/watch/see-time-in-daylight-apd3ab22534c/watchos

Thank you! I guess I should’ve directed this to the folk who say they wear the their Apple Watch on top of their jacket cuffs
