Hi all. Wanting to buy my grandad his first ever smart phone for his 80th birthday. My husband came across an iPhone 5c in a reputable second hand tech store chain but when he went to buy it the guy behind the counter said we wouldn’t be able to FaceTime my grandad on the iPhone 5c because of out of date iOS updates. I have an iPhone 11 and husband has iPhone 13. Is that true? The whole point is so I can FaceTime my grandparents and send them pictures.
What about an older iPad?
It won’t work. An iPhone X or 8 would go for less than 150 euro/dollar. That would be a better buy if you’re going as cheap as possible.
Buy him an SE
Old people have generally bad vision, meaning they benefit from bigger screen. I would look for 8 Plus or 11 or something similar.
yes, you need to buy a newer iphone, facetime will not work on the 5c
get him an 11 or 12 second hand if you can. 11 still good in 2023
Considering getting your grandfather a phone which was launched around 9 to 10 years ago. Clearly not someone who is poor because you’re using an iPhone 11 and your husband is using an iPhone 13
Why are you being so cheap? He is your grandfather after all
Rather not get him a phone, then insult him with a 5CSee if you can get an XR. Pretty cheap second hand now. Or else get an iPhone 8 or SE
5c is fun as a lightweight music device. I wouldn’t pay more that $20 for one though.
Definitely recommend the SE 3 as it can get the current iOS.
I would look for a good condition iPhone 8
Too old. Id look for a 2nd gen SE or 8 plus for the size.
I wouldn’t look for anything older than iphone 8. Both 8 and X are already discontinued, in a couple of years or even before they will be unusable.
buy him 7+ or XR, for elderly people bigger screen is really important
The iPhone 5c won’t work in the USA as it lacks VoLTE (AT&T and Verizon are 4G and 5G only now).
