I’ve never been diagnosed with ADHD (although I’ve never been tested and my daughter has it) but this describes me very accurately. I’ve gotten through 46 years without any sort of help with ADHD, but maybe if I had been tested and gotten help for it, I would have been more successful.
I feel similar.
I have spoken about this topic with a good friend of mine, and his response was a long the lines of: “Yeah, I feel the same way. We all feel the same way. This is the normal human condition”.
And I think along the lines of: Well, maybe both of us have ADHD and we are good friends because we relate to each other. Or, maybe my friend is right, and to a certain degree a lot of ADHD discussions over-pathologize behaviors and experiences that are common to healthy humans. I don’t know. I haven’t looked at the research on this topic.
An interesting study would be one in which this or a similar comic is shown to a random selection of college students with and without an ADHD diagnosis, and they are asked to rate how strongly they feel identified by the cycle presented. I am sure many studies like this have been done… If any of you has some literature with experiments like this one, I’d love to check it out.
The main reason I think I might have it other than fitting a lot of symptoms generally is that my daughter has it and I would not be surprised if there were a genetic component.
Now that you mention family relations, I think about my mom and my dad. My mom presents some of the stereotypical ADHD traits very very strongly, and my father doesn’t at all. And I’ve never noticed my dad stuck in this cycle, but I think I’ve seen my mom. I will show this figure to my parents and ask both of them if they relate at all. Although I need to translate this into spanish, or find a spanish version…
This is really interesting. One of my family members has ADHD and I was about to say “huh I have this cycle and I don’t have ADHD.” I guess it’s possible I have it but never got it diagnosed because it’s mild enough that I’m functioning without medication/support, but at the same time I wonder if this is actually truly unique to ADHD or a behavior that’s just commonly classified with it.
It’s hereditary. ;) Get checked.
There is. Get checked, let me know your region if you want a resource.
I’m a little reticent to get genetic testing done because most of the companies doing it are selling the data they collect. I don’t know of a reputable one in the U.S. at the moment. Please do share if you do.
Oh, that is not what I meant; sorry, I am on a lot of painkillers right now lol. The word I was looking for is hereditary! 😆 CHADD is where you want to start for the USA. They are super reputable and do good work. https://chadd.org/for-adults/overview/ There’s also a good book for adults by Dr. Russell A. Barkley called “Taking Charge of Adult ADHD” - this guy is considered the guy as far as ADHD research is concerned and the book can be found pretty easily via Anna’s Archive. He puts out a lot of the modern guidelines. He is pretty good, but he has a very particular approach and don’t worry if you don’t jive with him. Also, check out this channel if video is more your format of choice: How to ADHD - she has a 101 playlist an explains everything very well in easy-to-understand language. @sal@mander.xyz - you might want to check these out too.
Honestly, at this point in my life, if I do have ADHD, I’ve developed enough coping strategies that it is not an impediment. My main concern is for my daughter, but she is on some excellent medication that works well and isn’t a scheduled substance and she has accommodations in school, so we’re on a good path there.
But I appreciate it, thank you.
I combo the stimulants and non-stimulants. Sometimes I think the non-stimulants help better. It’s really a game of trying to find what works best for you, you know! Definitely check out that channel, though. They have some great videos on girls and women with ADHD that your daughter may appreciate. I know when I first figured it out they made me cry haha.
Will it’s like the difference between sadness and depression. Yeah, everybody experiences sadness and scatterbrained-ness but if you have depression/ADHD it goes beyond localized incidents and begins to affect your day to day life.
This can include your personal affect, even if you present fairly normal on a macro level.
I appreciate how much content you bring to Mander but don’t burn yourself out lol!!
I just spent like 10 hours in the ER it’s all good. 😅 Keeping me sane while I wait for surgery on my foot.
Ugh, the ER is the worst. I’ve had to go three times so far this year and the shortest time I was there was six hours. And I went early in the morning all three times so the waiting room was empty when I got there.
Haha, yeah then I feel super guilty when I’m there, but they said I did good to check. I feel so bad for people that work in that setting.
I didn’t feel guilty because it was totally necessary every time. For two different problems. I do feel bad for the ER workers though. I’m sure a lot of people come in with things that you don’t need a hospital to fix. In my case, it definitely required a hospital. Especially for the kidney stone. Ouch.
Owie! I hope you feel better!!
It was months ago, so yes, I’m fine now. Thanks.
That’s a bummer, I hope you heal up quickly! I am curious while we are on the topic though, do you make use of any bots to assist with the number of posts, or do you just frequent certain news/scientific journals?
RSS feeds on my tiny aged server + Mastodon. :) Check /c/mander. I posted an old listing of feeds for people to use. I haven’t collated everything yet but it’s a lot of them.
Hope you get better soon!

I just discovered this community and these resources are invaluable. But yes, OP shouldn’t get worn out from posting all this 😄
Don’t forget a few new hobbies mixed in there!
“Avoidance”
Damn it, me avoiding all my new hobbies…
Onto the pile they go!
Wait is this ADHD?
It can be. This is a good, non-dry read: https://mashable.com/article/what-is-adhd-myths-stigma?europe=true
Thanks! Very nice article.
Is there a way to “save” posts on lemmy like you could on reddit?
I hit the little bookmark icon (using Connect app).
Yes, there is. It appears as a star on the desktop browser. If you are using mobile, you may want to switch to the native web app, as it has all of these features. When you visit lemmy on a mobile browser, you should see an option to install it, it should say something along the lines of “add to home screen.”
I recognize myself in this cycle every time, but can’t break myself out of it
It helps a ton when you see it and learn to stop and re-evaluate. Those tips on here are pretty good advice. HALT helps too short term!
I really feel this chart speaking to me
What phase are you on? I’m about 3-6pm.
Yup, same for me. Moving into guilt and neglect. I’m moving and I should be packing boxes and cleaning my room, instead I’m here. I also have coding projects which I havent’ worked on for a while, but I would like to finish soon 🤷 (for them in particular I’m close close to entering the quitting phase)
Edit: What about your phases?
I’m sitting here with my coffee having the I cannot do anything because I have a meeting in five hours mode. Could be :15, could be :30 lmao!
Wow, I know that feeling so well
