One game I do not even know the title of. My brother used to play it when I was 6 years old. I remember the game being monochrome, not sure about the crt itself. But it was a kind of XCOM if I’d have to describe it, about some crew that lands on an underwater planet. It’s still my white whale coz I still have not found even the name . I tried chatgpting suggestions recently to no avail.

It’s not a white whale, it’s a Holy Grail. The white whale is something that occupies your every waking moment and you wish to eliminate so you can get on with your life.

Put in the apartment application tonight. My credit’s better than it’s ever been, I have more cash on hand than I’ve ever had before, I even have money to pay movers this time. I don’t want to jinx it so I’m gonna expect obstacles still, but it’s looking good.

AND I got approved. Holy shit I’m so excited.

You have no idea how dead one’s dating life becomes when they are 40 and have no place of their own. But mostly I’m looking forward to whatever untold levels of mental health await me when I get alone time every day, and don’t have to worry about the rent.

I’ve had apartments before … and I was always late on the rent.

I had a really high-paying job once … but I was moving from couch to couch because it was so high stress I couldn’t navigate finding a place, and I lived paycheck to paycheck, and that went on a year and a half and then they fired me. I might have been able to make it if I’d had an apartment, could truly rest each night.

        Now, it’s all coming together:

        The apartment
        The job
        AT THE SAME TIME

Holy shit I have never been stable in my entire life.

For my mother money was chaos. She worked for herself. It was boom and bust. We’d splurge. We’d scrape. We’d go without when money didn’t come in. She saved nothing. Ever. My grandfather died and the family decided to sell his land to a suburb developer. She got $35k. The money was gone in a flash, as was my grandfather’s beautiful land.

My model of success in life was “be brilliant, get discovered, rocket to the stars”. I saw the world as chutes and ladders: lucky breaks catapulting me into new social strata. I went to a fancy college, took out loans.

After I got out I quit my first full time job. Too boring. Moved into a techie frat house. Started writing code. Worked freelance because I wanted to be free.

My friends and peers got jobs. Took vacations. Had their evenings free. I was a businessman! with no boss! I was free!. But I was always broke. Occasionally I’d get a big contract.

But I didn’t follow through. I cut corners. I smoked weed like a chimney, and procrastinated my work. I worked super short days. I’d go to a coffee shop, open the computer, code for an hour, decide “eh I’ll get cracking tomorrow” and then I’d leave.

I constantly drank coffee, thinking it would motivate me. I had no idea that anxiety was a bigger problem than any “lack of motivation” I had. So I’d sit there and drink coffee and eat simple carbs and get into a miserable state.

But I was that glitzy, glamorous figure: the dude with the computer making bank in hourly. I kept cranking my rates up.

My zen teacher said to me, repeatedly, “I think a good move for you would be to just get a full time job”. I ignored his advice.

Then in 2017 I got my hands on some acid, and microdosed for a while. I suddenly realized: all my financial problems come from the irregularity of my income. The acid blew my mind with a new realization: I’m getting old and this working-for-myself shit isn’t working. (Thanks LSD!)

Anyway, it’s been a long hard road and I now make almost nothing compared to when I made senior software dev money, yet my finances are healthier.

I could go on and on. Thank you for your encouragement!

Kind of shameful but there is this one porn movie I used to have on a CDR that got lost between apartments. It’s stupid cause it’s #17 of a 20+ series and you can find #16 and #18 in like 2 minutes, but this one has disappeared from the face of the internet. The studio stopped listing it some time ago then they were bought out and the new owners never listed that one. Believe it or not I literally sent an email to the male star of the movie, but he never responded. There goes my holy grail. It must have gone out of stock and maybe the masters got lost or something. I know one rip was made at some point cause I found a filename in a listing, but it is long lost. Farewell lost porn 🙋‍♂️ farewell…

A complete collection of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, including the first few years that nobody thought to record. The LLS Archive channel on YouTube is the most comprehensive source available but there’s still huge gaps of missing episodes. Rumor has it there’s one guy out there who recorded every episode on VHS but is refusing to digitize them.

A remix version of Dragostea Din Tei, aka the Numa Numa, where the artist faded in part of the song a couple of times in a really interesting manner. I found it on limewire back in the mid 2000s and lost it in a reformat. Haven’t found it since.

I just listened to both and it wasn’t either of them sadly. This one faded in the “Vrei sa pleci dar nu mă, nu mă iei” on repeat, starting at a volume so low that you question whether or not you actually hear it the first time and it gets louder with each repeat. I feel like it repeats 4 or 5 times before the song continues.

There used to be some opendirectory posts that had some weirdly unsecured files if complete stand ups. You’d have to chip them down for tracks and metadata but it was a fair amount of 80s - 90s albums.

Honestly, I’d try slsk (through the program nicotine+ ideally). There’s shit up there that I’m straight up surprised to find quite often, just make sure to put like 1,000 files (can be almost anything, fr) in your share folder before you begin downloading or the bots will get ya, and hope that the only copy isn’t from some cocksucker that [Private]s all his files for trades like a true scumbag (also, if you see those people, ban them from your files. However If they just mark [Private] and don’t specify trades, they may just add you if you PM them and are sharing stuff yourself, those guys are ok). I also put my downloads folder in my share folder to just automatically re-share everything I get until I need to clear space (unless I choose not to reshare a file and I save it somewhere else of course). You can also set a wishlist in case someone with a file matching your description comes online at a later date if you can’t find it right then.

If you’re looking for a few specific ones I can check a couple to see if they’re up there real quick, no problem.

Wow haven’t heard of nicotine+ or slsk before. Is that P2P ala soulseek? I’ll definitely have to check it out.

Will probably happen later rather than sooner, ever since RARBG peaced out I’ve been slowly working on installing the arrs for my server and importing my libraries. And that is already taking a significant amount of my free time lol.

Fun School 6: Futureland. Its a shitty edutainment game from the 90s that I played non-stop for like a year, that I want to get my hands on for nostalgia purposes. As far as I can tell its not available (online or physical media) anywhere. I finally found a copy for sale a few years ago, but it turned out to be a mislabelled copy of fun school 6: fairyland.

I will keep searching, eventually a copy will show up somewhere!

I recently had the pleasure to slay it actually. It was the kinda like Twilight Zone but Horror ‘Night Gallery’ from 1996. It did exist, but the torrent that was circulating was messed up beyond belief. Episodes cut off at 20 minutes etc. Some dude on a private tracker ripped the whole thing anew for me.

    1. Dead Poetic band merch. A little-known post hardcore band from the early 2000’s. I’ve got all of their CDs and some limited press Vinyls, but I would kill for some legit shirts. Years ago I found a sketchy site that claimed to have a handful left, but they were all too small. I wish now I still had bought them anyways, but oh well.

    2. A GameBoy game I played as a kid that was some kind of JRPG. It wasn’t a well known one like Chrono, Mother, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc. I have searched through lists online and tried finding screenshots and videos of gameplay, been through several hours of vids, but nothing I’ve found has been it.

    3. A stupid video from the earlier days of YouTube called “The Poop.” There is a “The Poop 2” but it’s not the same. My friend and I found it randomly on some late night YouTube binge and cried laughing. It became an inside joke between us for years and we would link the video to each other or sing the music from it for instant laughter. It either got privated or deleted. I’ve spent hours and hours combing through the depths of YT and the internet at large trying to find a copy/reupload, same for my friend, but we’ve never found it.

<Edit> Number 2 is SOLVED!!! Holy crap, I literally just randomly found it. Talking about it here inspired me to try some more Google-fu and I happened across an ebay listing for Quest: Brian’s Journey and the cartridge artwork immediately jogged my memory. Looks like I mis-remembered some details, that makes me even happier that I found it!

Going to be totally NOT downloading a ROM to play on my Steam Deck this evening…I would never…

      1. I remember being gifted this weird JRPG for the Gameboy that was not even localized, and being a stubborn kid I randomly went through its japanese menus trying to see what each thing did, but gave up in the end. Years later I had a flashback and went to YouTube, only to find it was actually an incredibly mediocre Gundam RPG called Lacroan Heroes. It’s a long shot, but that’s the most obscure JRPG I know of for the Gameboy, maybe that’s it?

      1. Long shot but have you tried to track down the band members? They might have some, or their record company if it’s still around

      2. Interesting… maybe provide any details you do recall about characters or map environments! A few people have been helped so maybe we can figure this out!

        1. Interestingly, my spouse found out that the lead vocalist now works as a graphic artist and has done work for some huge groups like Twenty One Pilots and Underoath. I found his webpage and have thought about sending him a message, but I haven’t ever done it, nervous I guess lol. Your prompt might give me the needed “oomph” to actually go through with it tho lol.

        2. It’s tough because I barely remember anything specific from it. To make it worse, the game had a saved profile when I got it, (it was second hand.) I only ever played that save file which was already at endgame content, so I don’t even remember what the intro/early game was like. Here’s all I can remember:

The color pallet was pretty bland. It had lots of random encounters and when they happened, there was a quick sequence where the edges of the screen spiraled inwards in a kind of striped, spiral pattern. There were lots of odd creatures, like these kind of rock worms/snakes if I remember correctly? You had a party of 3-4 people and lots of different spells/abilities. I remember I got lost for a long time wandering through some ice caves and kept having to fight random monsters every 10-20 seconds. I can’t really remember the story or lore even. But I’m pretty confident I’d know the music/sounds if I heard them.

A good quality version of the “VR.5” tv series from 1995. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VR.5

It’s a TV show about virtual reality and has peak 90’s aesthetic. They shot the scenes in "virtual reality"on black and white film and colorized them manually afterwards to create a very distinct and vibrant look. That must’ve been so much hard work.

Sadly, there is only a 240p VHS rip with extremely terrible quality out there. I’ve always wanted to watch the whole thing, but it’s too degraded to enjoy like this.
