I just wanted to say that with the last two/three updates Memmy has become even better! The user experience is great and my Lemmy journey is a lot more pleasant with this app

I came from Apollo, and I gotta say that Memmy feels like a spiritual successor to it. Nice, clean, and fast!

Same here, loving the experience in TestFlight. I’m also eager to see this app push beyond just quality of life/stability changes and throw in some unique Fediverse features as well

Same. It absolutely feels like it. I’ve really enjoyed Lemmy for the few days I’ve been here and Memmy just makes it so nice. I’m very surprised how much time I’ve spent here.

Since it seems like a lot of people here aren’t aware, this is app is open source and publicly licensed, and you can watch the effort being put in on github. It seems like the developer has been working around the clock to get this done, for free, writing code that is owned by the community. If you are loving it, send a few bucks to say thanks: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/gavink

It’s doubly laudable when you consider that he’s paying $100 for a developer license so we can have Memmy for free. He might have had the license already for other projects, but still, I’m humbled by the generosity, both in time, effort, and money.

True but for iOS developers this can be seen also as an investment, as any employer will hire you after seeing you maintain an app like Memmy. It’s the best kind of portfolio you can have.

Not really, IMO. I maintained a large open source project for a few years and the amount of time suck and mental drain is hard to overstate. Most employers seemed to barely look at it even though they could have clearly seen how I programmed, interacted with users, etc. And, if you decide to stop maintaining it, all those happy users are going to be unhappy users. Given that even bad developers have not much trouble getting steady work, and that all that time could have been invested in a project that earned or had the potential to earn money, it’s sort of hard to justify outside of personal passion. Just my experience, anyway…

Sad to know, and it’s partly the reason I don’t work on a open source iOS app currently: I’d rather work on something that solves a problem people are willing to pay.

I worked on apps that are used by the general public before (not mine, a company’s app) and the amount of users who are willing to shit on something without trying to understand that their issue isn’t common and we’d need more information to fix it are very high.

I think it’s better to have an app that makes a small niche happy than having a general popular app that will attract many toxic people.

The default behaviour is to swipe from left to right on the comment. In the latest TestFlight release (0.1.0), they’ve added icons that you can tap on.

That works for me, until I accidentally move it too far and downvote. Then it’s a struggle to get it back to normal, and then it seems primed to downvote again, because it’s a struggle to get to the upvote again.

If you downvote, the next swipe actions are reversed so you can easily cancel that downvote. Then you’re back to zero and can do either again.

Note I’m on TestFlight and not 100% sure if the recent fixes here are in the App Store version yet.

Thanks for pointing this out. I’m not a fan of changing the swipe behavior contextually because it adds an additional cognitive layer to try and save a few milliseconds. The tradeoff isn’t a good one, but an interesting ui exploration. Loving all the updates so quickly in general though.

Interesting. It seems like the UI does get stuck showing a downvote even though a small swipe is applying an upvote.

Since you’re here, how do I mark my mail as read? No matter what I do it stays with the notification unread.

As others have pointed out, by default Memmy is swipe to vote. However I think the developer has a build coming with tap to vote as well!

It’s a far superior app from the few available for Reddit, I would like swipe to scroll on videos/gifs, maybe in the future.

I guess people not knowing about swiping the comments is why they added the buttons. Apollo and every reddit app I ever regularly used had swiping actions for comments and replys so it’s natural to me. I’m guessing most apps have some sort of tutorial for teaching this when first starting to use the app. I kinda prefer less space being used with swipe only UI.

Maybe this is not the place, but since the app is open source maybe some designer may create a new icon for the App? To be honest, the current one looks to me ugly

It’s really great so far! Couple things I’d like to see integrated or fixed:

Sometimes child comments do not show

An interface toggle to show only top level comments, or to scroll to the next or previous parent comment

Just came to say that I like Memmy a lot, as well.

I’m just curious, what are the iOS alternatives for the fediverse right now?
