@bacteriostat I really like that concept. My old device (Lenovo X230) is getting really old, so I think of a replacement . But I guess that I will wait for AMD.
Definitely trying one for my next build.
I love the concept, especially with the IO modules. But I wouldn’t know what to do with the old device/parts even if I can easily built a new machine out of them. The last time I got a new laptop I sold the old one, so it didn’t go on a landfill anyways.
In an ideal world, you’d also sell the parts. Someone who couldn’t afford the new model should be able to assemble an older model from spare parts.
But another option is to 3D print a case for the mainboard, then run it as a Lemmy server :)
Ah, so you’re the culprit, “Dave Lemmy”. Tried registering the lemmy.nz domain a few of days ago as it was available, but unfortunately I put it off for the next day and bam, it was gone. :'(
Haha you’ve gotta be quick around here! I just saw it was available, which started a chain of events leading to setting up a Lemmy node.
Now the next hurdle comes, which is how do you build up a membership? A big problem is that Lemmy seems to default to the “Local” feed on the home page. Which is of course full of nothing. I’ve subscribed to a bunch of communities, but the “Subscribed” tab isn’t the default home page like it would be on reddit.
This is a pretty poor experience to the new user, not sure if you had a plan around this?
The thing that interests me the most is the upgradable speakers/webcam.
My current laptop has the crappiest speakers, and the webcam is beyond garbage. I would give anything to be able to pop in some new 2023 ones.
I already see they have better speakers available on their website. Not to mention future upgrades. No doubt webcams and stuff are going to get better, and you don’t necessarily need a whole new laptop just because you started a job that requires you to have a decent webcam.
I freaking love it.
Or just the fact you can swap the screen from glossy to matte if you want in literal seconds. Now imagine if in the future they release some nice 4K panels?
I’m definitely interested in Framework. Being able to choose the ports, and location of the ports will solve a small but continuesly annoying problems.
