NATO was created as a mutual defence pact against a potential threat posed by Stalin’s Soviet Russia that was never realised. Stalin and Soviet Russia are long gone but NATO continues to expand its influence right up to the borders of Russia as if we still need to gang up on them, cold war style. Meanwhile the oligarchs, who continue to subvert the narrative and lay waste to the middle east, are permitted to act with impunity. We probably should keep an eye on what the Russians are up to but not at the expense of losing sight of the Epstein class of mendacious warmongers, the real and present threat to peace and stability.

We must accept this paradox in the same way we must accept that our bodies are in a constant state of renewal and the person we were seven years ago has been completely renewed at a cellular level (maybe bones are exempt but brain cells don’t last forever). We tend to think of ourselves as a continuous process and our identity persists and is stable. On the other hand, it’s easy to argue that we are not the same person as we were seven years ago, we have grown and changed physically and spiritually. Only our identity documents contend that our identity is static. We seek stability and certainty everywhere and find it nowhere. If we can accept the ever changing nature of the universe at large we can find solace in constant change because that’s how it will always be.

It took me about 40 years to finally realise how much privilege has been bestowed upon me. It’s a very strange thing to view personal historical events through this lens. I don’t regret anything, the opposite in fact, it’s a source personal development.
