is me, just like on lemmy.wtf, but here on lemmy.today, hoping for more uptime with the no instance censoring.

Out of all the Linux init systems out there, which one are you actually daily driving right now and why?

    Runit.

    Simplicity.

    Runit is nice.

Have you tried any others before your current one?

Most of the big names. Yet to give s6 or dinit a proper go.

What made you stick with it over the rest?

    Simplicity. Niceness.

    [Edit: Honourable mention: OpenRC]

  • It’s quite frustrating to watch this kind of thing, having known [for decades] of photovoltaic paints and dyes technologies that radically reduce the cost of photovoltaics, lose a little efficiency in direct optimally angled light, but gain loads of efficiency in shallow angle, ambient, low light, which is what most photovoltaic surfaces experience most of the time. … There are some types that are just buckyballs and nanotubules… and with cannabis based production thereof, we can really really make a massive dent in the pollution from energy tech, and lower the cost, and empower more people, decentralising energy supply, making the whole energy system more robust. Then there are mushroom/mycelia tech that can further be used cleanly in production of products/devices, and even, capture energy without light.

… But then, that would disrupt existing industry and plans for maximising wealth extraction, and whatever other perverse ploys beyond just sequestering fiat. So we do not get nice things. We get idiots (“those who do not participate in democracy”), in our system of governance and administration, purporting and preening itself as if it’s democracy, while protecting those who are polluting the world the most to keep people down and dependent via rents on their polluting inferior tech, keeping people enslaved under economic duress.

[EDIT: PS, for emphasis neglected: … and it’s paint! (/dye!). … meaning you can basically cover everything in it. No need to optimise angle to sun. No need to have fixed specialised panels taking up space ~ like taking up space from farmland (~ so insane). Not just all the opaque surfaces. The dye, means even your windows (in your home, car, work, everywhere), could be generating usable electricity for you. … Can you imagine how radically different that would be?]

  • *Ahem*

    mcedit

under sung hero of easy tui text editors. [Has controls on screen.]

overlooked because it’s part of mc, and thus does not show up in the text editor categories in package managers and websearches?

could do a similar THGTTG bit for it. … or other parodies of other stuff… idk, my brain not conjuring such things with ease just now.

(And yes, I missed the reference, at first, too… Thought about responding with some contrived towel elaboration).

  • Huh. … I could have swore there was a woman. I even package searched, even in overlays… no woman.

digit 20260807 tyson gentoo /home/digit % whereis woman
    woman:
digit 20260807 tyson gentoo /home/digit % which woman
    which: no woman in (/bedrock/cross/pin/bin:/bedrock/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/opt/bin:/opt/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/snap/bin:/home/digit/bin:/usr/games/bin:/usr/games:/bedrock/strata/devuan/usr/libexec/xscreensaver:/home/digit/.cargo/bin:/bedrock/cross/bin)
digit 20260807 tyson gentoo /home/digit % apropos woman
    woman: nothing appropriate.

digit 20260807 tyson gentoo /home/digit % man cry
    No manual entry for cry
digit 20260807 tyson gentoo /home/digit % whereis cry

    No woman.

    No cry.
