I just play Steam Deck and write about gaming + Linux a lot
We do our best in the /c/games community! It isn’t niche by any means, but we have regular posters (including myself) and we have fair engagement on new posts and members also.
Unfortunately as is the nature of most social media, it can only be as active as the users. So for very niche subjects I can’t see Lemmy ever being super viable (sadly)
Whether I could create a new account on Reddit for the first time in years, in order to share articles I have written with more people
Within 24 hours I had one absolutely crazy person declaring that forever more whatever I posted they’d add a comment under it warning people that I’m on a posting crusade (I posted it to one sub: consolerepair)
Needless to say this experiment was flames

Hi there! Sorry, I’m the author of the article (just noticed this was cross-posted), so I can address this!
I guess the fact it rotates out isn’t going to be earth shattering, if you’re looking for that being the one reason it is worth owning (a rotating mechanism for the display), you wouldn’t get it. But to me being able to use it for things like listening to music (on-device, offline music, or streaming), watching an older anime episode, an audiobook, or scrolling through Mastodon while it is in the cube format, then being able to flip it open to play some GBA just makes it unique.
I have it sitting on my desk or shelf as I work, propped up facing me to stream music. Then I can pick it right up after I’m done and go back to FFVII on there.
I just like how this handheld ‘feels’. Smooth rounded corners and edges, and with a super satisfying weight to it. And I don’t think that ‘feel’ ever gets enough coverage for retro handhelds.

You might have to reinstall a plugin, but I’ve only seen that issue literally once. It only happens if that plugin is dependent on being on the beta channel.
Once you switch back to stable, just restart your Steam Deck and it’ll be good to go!
No data loss or anything awful. But if it helps, I’ll check in with my friend on Decky and get his confirmation before you do :)
Here’s my tip (being friends with the Decky team, and having reported on them/interviewed them for a long time now!)
When you install Decky, stay on the stable branch.
When there is a update for the Steam Deck, wait a few hours until Decky have their update, install that first.
Every single complaint about Decky is totally fixed with these two dead-simple actions.
Then grab SteamGridDB and change all your game art (that’s my fav plugin!)

I remember when I used to write ridiculously long and detailed guides on Steam Deck things, so many people asked me to do the same for installing and tweaking Windows for the Deck! I don’t begrudge anyone who wants to install and use it, but it sure isn’t my scene. Or recommendation.

I used to adore the en dash and em dash. If I see writing I did and submitted around with articles and guides from like three years ago, they’re all through it. But then GPT boomed and I couldn’t be bothered dealing with the allegations. Ironically, those claims still haunt me.
It can be so exhausting that we need to do this to appear human now. It can just be heartbreaking!

In fact, tiny edit here. The moderator of this community will speak for me, I’ve been writing things for this space for a long time now. More than that I’m more than happy for you to come and join our discord if you’d like. I have friends in there like the former lead tech writing for Forbes, or the guy who owns the site who will speak for me and what I write.
I hate this shit. The mere face we can write and this whole new scene of A.I. replicating writers’ work and then it is doubted and we have to deal with this is the worlds’ most exhausting nonsense to deal with.
For anyone who still wants to access Reddit just to browse favorite (niche) subs which won’t ever get traction here, some third-party apps still work.
My favorite is cygnusx’s Slide for Reddit fork (they picked it up after it was abandoned). You can use it logger in or anonymously - without an account logged in:

^ you can see my Slide app with the frontpage showing regular subs, and it doesn’t use the dumb new reddit algorithm which shows you posts from like a week ago.
The other option is Morphe who patch the official Reddit app. It will require an account but you can change a heap of things, block everything you dislike too. The patching app does YouTube and YouTube Music or whatever they call it, but it also patches Reddit:
