  • Thank you for posting this! A good friend of mine use to be pretty open minded, but he is constantly exposed to racist, sexist, abliest, and transphobic people in his family and his work. His bigotry just started out as making a “casual” joke that he “meant no offense by”, but now he says the most hateful things about all sorts of people. I had tried and tried again to call him out on it, but i realized he just makes those kind of jokes around people he knows will not get offended (so he has mostly stopped with me, but some times he can’t seem to help himself, which pisses me off). My SO and I are both part of the queer community and it has broken my heart to see my good friend slip into this kind of language and hate. He use to be such a safe person for me to rely on, but now is just a hateful asshole. I just recently had to cut him off because I was not getting though to him and it has been severely affecting my mental health continuing to be his friend. I really needed to read this.

  • This to me is very important to point out as I see so many people treat this kind of thing as censorship. It is so important to point out that the individual this whole thread is about is quite literally ask how to end “wokeness” which is a thin veil for how do we take away the rights of marginalized groups. Make no mistake, people like this, whether they say it out loud or not, don’t want these marginalized groups (such as transgender individuals) to exist. So to say it is just speech and leave it at that is like telling someone they can’t be upset that some said they want them dead (because for tansgenderness to not exist they would have to kill transgender people, it’s not just get swept under the rug).

Yes I am aware that at its most technical level, this is a call to censorship, but people are lumping this in with the same idea as someone claiming we should censor political opinions, as if the existence of transgender people is a political discussion. Anyone acting like this fall in the same kind of speech and should be protected from censorship is FLEXING THEIR PRIVILEGE. You are not the target and are privileged in the fact that you can ignore that this threatens certain individuals existence.

  • John Oliver is a TV show host who currently hosts a show called “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”, a show where he talks about topics he feels is relevant to the current public, or should be brought to their attention. That show is currently in hiatus due to the writers strike. Before that show he worked on a “comedy news” show on Comedy Central called the “Daily Show”, which was one of the most watched programs on Comedy Central. He was a correspondent there for most of his tenure, though, if I remember correctly, he briefly served as host once the original host, John Stewart, stepped down.

To why he might be relevant right now to people aware of the Reddit protests, he has stated he supports the Redditors protest even going so far as to share photos they could use of him to use in one of the forms of protest that has been going around on Reddit, which is spamming photos of John Oliver’s face.

  • So I am also personally of the opinion that it is perfectly fine for ljdawson to keep it closed source and that is a deeply personal decision to open source a personal project. If sync stayed closed, that is perfectly fine. I do just want to clarify though that open source does not mean that individuals would necessarily be able to alter or contribute directly to the original Sync repo, just that the Sync repo would available to be viewed and forked. So if someone wanted to modify Sync, then they would be able to fork it ans create their own version, but the original Sync you know could be controlled entirely by ljdawson.

  • Can’t say for sure, but they have figured how to make an exposed charge port safe to dunk I’m water. I am sure there will be some way to have both an enclosed battery and the terminals to connect the battery do the same. The phone may get larger to accommodate making this possible though, for anyone who remembers how chunky early 2000 replaceable batteries could be, I’m sure replaceable batteries will have to be something akin to that (though hopefully a little more streamlined)
