In a later statement from VALVE they cleared up that this i not what they meant to say. All Steam Machines come with 1x16gb at the moment. But it might change in the future and then they cannot or don’t want to guarantee either setups. There are no Steam Machines with 2x8gb from VALVE at this moment.


So you don’t want to game on it and its just to distribute your Windows updates on your local network? Didn’t even know this was possible (if it is), sorry if I misunderstand that. Why is a Steam Machine the best option for this?


I assume to play those games that do not run on Linux. Its sad, but the only way to play them is to install the malware Windows. If that was your plan all along, why did you even bothered to buy a Steam Machine?


Note, they make an assumption which cannot be derived by data: 65% adoption of the base configuration, 35% adoption of the high-tier configuration. While it makes sense on paper, we don’t know how many units VALVE even produced and produces of both. I remember VALVE saying they were surprised how many of the high tier models of Steam Deck were sold back when it launched. Also the enthusiasts and early adopters probably would like to buy the higher model. I can see that VALVE started with a 50/50 distribution, and based on demand shifts AND availability of SSD towards one. All around its still a well made and educated guess of the numbers, based on the little data we have.

Huh. I wonder when this is needed to set it after a process is started. Is there an actual use case for this? I understand what this does, but why would anyone change it? Is there a real world example someone could give me?


That does not mean people don’t get the appeal, they just don’t find it attractive enough. In example for me i absolutely get the appeal of the Steam Machine. I have feelings for it too. But in the end would rather build my own, because I’m not the target audience for it. I understand its appeal, but its not a high value for myself. And many other, that’s why they build their own without dismissing its value for others.


It is hard to think in and see through the eyes from a Kernel core maintainer, if you don’t do this kind of stuff at this level. Instead enforcing style guides, looking for edge cases and unexpected issues because C allows to do anything must be terrifying. Part of this “nonsense” goes away using a language that is designed to handle this better. And you know, learning a new language with features you always wanted to have in C might be exciting too, I don’t know. I can imagine Rust being more fun than C in the Kernel for some, so this is not a wild take or anything like that.
I think the most exhausting part of Rust was two fold: a) the language was not designed to be used in the Kernel, they needed to update and discuss after real world usage, and b) the push back from C developers who either didn’t understand Rust or think its bad for the Kernel. The childhood illnesses of Rust in Linux is seemingly over.
You know we Linux people (generalization I know) are a bit sensitive, and some people (admittedly me too) tend to exaggerate either for fun or by pure hate or even in some cases without knowing what is happening. And if you didn’t follow what happened, then you might not even understand why. There was issues what Ubuntu did in the past. If you have no experience with that, and you are happy with your setup, then keep using it. I’m not here to mud the fun of the users.
I installed Ubuntu in recent years a few times in Virtual Machines. Its a fine distribution. There are edge cases where some people have a problem with, and those are the loudest. This is basically Linux tradition behavior. :D Edit: Also my reply was partially about the “snappy”, which I think is a play on the Snap Store of Ubuntu.
The reason why my tone about Ubuntu was like that, is, because Ubuntu used to be slow and sluggish experience in some cases, when the Snap was introduced. It wasn’t good back then. Sure I’m a bit exaggerating for the lolz and so on. I actually don’t know how good Ubuntu feels nowadays. Ubuntu was my Linux system I installed in 2008 to replace Windows XP (!) and kept using for about 13 years or so. So I saw its ups and downs first hand until 2022 or something like that when I changed to different distribution.

I guess so that actual bots can be marked as bots, so they do not get deleted. There is also an option to hide bot posts (which I do), for anyone who is bothered by. Bots does not automatically mean spam. There are legit bots useful to grab news and auto-post them faster than humans could. I didn’t know they cannot vote, which makes totally sense. Any bots not marked as bots can be reported and they will get banned (presumably, I don’t know).

I think the Archinstall script (that is part of the official Arch iso) can save the configuration, to reinstall with same setup again. But it does not go into details like your Firefox environment. Its there to setup the basic installation and eventually additional packages.


I get it, they needed to change from Minetest to something better (because of the test) and to not get associated or confused with the original Minecraft (because of the Mine). I don’t know what, but it sounds like they wanted to have a creative and somewhat original name. I admire this goal (if it was), but in the end the chosen name is not good. I forgot it was Minetest and opened the post to see what it is about.

That’s your definition. You even say that you don’t care about RAM, but a program hogging lot of RAM while you don’t use all the features is bloat by all definition. Isn’t it? You just don’t care about this sort of bloat. And that’s totally fine. My original reply was to give a reason why someone did not want to install both applications doing basically the same thing. That’s one sort of bloat. You may not care, but the person asked why not install both.
Bloat can also mean a program that does 1000 things and you use only a few things of it. Or if you have one application that loads ton of stuff into RAM just to watch a video. Another day you load the same application to edit a source code, but it still loads ton of stuff into RAM. That one application in this case is the bloat, even if its used regularly. The threshold of bloat, even if the definition is the same, is also different for every person to person. That adds up to the confusion or misunderstanding.
After the discussions with him, I think he is just trolling (lime!). At one point, his suggestion was no need for an entire operating system, other than the Kernel and a Browser.
I don’t know if you are trolling, but that is a nonsense reply. The original question was why not install MPV and VLC at the same time. I don’t use a browser for everything, because its bloat. I use dedicated applications that does one job, and does it well. You can keep using your browser for everything, but that is not what this post topic is about.
These were new applications and so we can assume over time they need updates. Or at least it shows how much interested developers are working on it. It would also be nice to have a random sample size of similar applications without the Ai to have a comparison how often they get updated.
