  • During job interviews, a question I used to often be asked was “how do you learn something?” (Phrased assorted different ways.) My answer was always pretty similar: don’t go into the learning process with the thought “I want to know x language” (or whatever).

Instead, have a goal to pursue. Don’t start thinking “I want to learn Linux,” start thinking “I want to use this operating system to make a server that can securely share media with my family.” Don’t think “I want to know Python,” come into it thinking “I want to make a chatbot.” (I don’t do much real programming, so I’m sorry if that’s a bad example.) Try to make it ambitious, but achievable. Originality and good execution are not even remotely requirements in this context. You just need a “why.” No one else will ever see what you do unless you want them to.

At least in my experience and that of those I’ve trained, if you just have an abstract target, you’re eventually not going to know where to go next and will run out of motivation. With a specific aim, even if you don’t comprehend the whole (yet!) you’ll often have a good idea of what the next step is and, whenever you achieve it, you’ll feel much more satisfaction by having gained progress on something you wanted than you would by completing an exercise in a book. As such, whatever lesson or lessons you may have learned will likely be easier to recall the next time you need them.

  • Assuming a lack of preexisting issues (which I feel safe assuming because a spelunker is probably either suicidal or fairly healthy), what would cause one to die in 36 hours? I recently referenced this in another comment, but I learned that one can survive three minutes without oxygen, three days without water, or three weeks without food. 36 hours doesn’t align with any of that.

  • Honestly, I didn’t know you were a mommy. That’s cool.

In case it’s a comfort, I am a dad. Most of my time is spent at home with my wife and child. I don’t really interact with many other people and, to our kid, I refer to my wife as “Mommy.” It’s become a habit … To the point that when we did have guests, I kept referring to her as “Mommy” even after the kid went to bed. That’s the only time I thought it inappropriate to say it and I didn’t realize that until it already happened.

  • I used to be friends with a person who had some kind of hound dog. He was very envious of physical affection; if he saw any two people cuddling, he would immediately jump up and muscle his way into the middle. (I only saw him do it once or twice but the owner assured me it was the norm for him.)

  • My work wanted me to use my phone (which, like yours, is Graphene) to login to the messenger they use. I briefly tried; it worked, but mandated enabling MDM. I did consider it, but while researching how much control it would grant if constrained to a work profile, I discovered it’s not currently supported in Graphene. So I just deleted the login and work profile and didn’t try to login any further.

I have an old, unused phone that’s still Android, so if they ever insist (and won’t provide me with a device), I’ll probably just set it up on that phone and use my actual phone as a hotspot … But that seems pretty ridiculous and I’d definitely have some objections.

Similarly, any bureaucratic actions require a 2FA app. I couldn’t really avoid that since I need to file my timesheets, but for reasons I’ve never ascertained, the app works on my tablet (which is also Graphene) but not my phone. I pretty much only ever turn my tablet on for that purpose and it’s on an SSID with guest isolation, so I don’t mind that as much.
