Bayer AG agreed on Thursday to pay $6.9 million to settle claims by New York Attorney General Letitia James that it misled consumers by advertising Roundup weedkiller, which has been linked to cancer, as environmentally safe.
Especially when the settlement is 6.9 million dollars, like that is absolutely insane considering they probably have made billions in profit (not just revenue) on weed killer over the years.
Indeed, this seems like less than a nuisance fine for a company that reported more than 13 billion Euro in earnings last year, on over $50 billion Euro in sales. Bayer press release. I wonder what the cost of cancer treatment was for all the people in New York that wouldn’t have gotten cancer but for the sale of Roundup.
Then again, the $10.9 billion settlement in 2020 seems more meaningful. The Guardian
Bayer just views this kind of thing as the cost of doing business.
