Nah she means the difficulties in science communication which the string theory proponents have caused through misleading the general public, and causing the average punter to view physicists with skepticism or assume that all physicists are string theorists.
I think she’s way overestimating the general public’s interest in physics and string theory. If anything has degraded trust in science, it’s all the anti-science right-wing propaganda being spread through social media. That’s what the general public is seeing daily, not some quotes from a physicist from 40 years ago.
