I really feel like this has not been reported on enough. This is really deeply scary shit, and extremist conservatives in every country are talking notes.

Moderate conservatives pretty much don’t exist anymore. I had a “fiscally conservative” and “moderate” acquaintance tell me that the world would be better if there were no sexual or gender minorities

Horrifying. I only have to hope that when it comes down to it, more people than not will realize internally ‘i am not actually willing to hurt people, i just wanted to say those things, and I’m kind of embarrassed about it now’ and then go back to being quiet bigots. I need to believe this about my fellow humans to get through the day.

There’s a pretty big difference between “I want to murder all sexual minorities” and “I wish there weren’t any sexual minorities”. The former is an actionable thing whereas the latter is picturing some sort of a utopia. Of course, if the latter leads to inaction when somebody else is doing the former, then that’s no good either.

He’s the sort of person who probably wouldn’t at least say out loud that they want to murder minorities, but I can tell you completely without any doubt that were some political party here to actually start doing it, he would be more than happy to see it happen – he’s convinced that white hetero men are the most repressed “minority” right now, and he’s literally said that the mere existence of sexual minorities is “polarizing” and “adversarial”.

This is pretty much how it is with all “moderate” conservatives. They might not outright say they want to murder minorities, but they would absolutely approve of others doing it.

My wife’s friend (a conservative white lesbian) tried to seriously tell me (white guy) that straight white guys are oppressed. I couldn’t do anything but blankly stare at her in disbelief as she completed her mental gymnastics. When she was done, I just blurted out “that’s the dumbest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.”

Conservative LGBT+ folks always just puzzle the fuck out of me. How stupid does someone have to be to support a cause that would have them eliminated if they got their way?

Gives some really big Association of German National Jews vibes; a pro-Hitler Jewish organization, the founder of which eventually got sent to a concentration camp

It’s because she grew up wealthy and her parents are also conservative. The idea that conservatives as a group would openly welcome the eradication of her ilk is completely lost on her, as much as I’ve tried to explain it to her. She thinks I’m being dramatic.

he’s convinced that white hetero men are the most repressed “minority” right now,

By his own logic, wouldn’t that mean he should think the world would be a better place if white hetero men like himself didn’t exist?

Oh no no, you see he’s the default and everybody else is a minority

          • You’re right. It’s gotten too easy for me to forget that, these days. Banking on the fact that most people do not actually want to cross that divide.

This kind of passive bigotry is necessary for genocides to occur. It is the foundation on which the mechanisms of genocide are built.

It’s not just no good; it’s terrifying.
