With the way Spez handled himself in public reddit no longer seems like this welcoming website that wants to foster fun communities for people to interact in. It’s just a full on corporate data harvesting site with an ethos similar to Facebook, and that just doesn’t make me feel comfortable contributing even a letter of content to it. The vibe is just off now even if the same people I interacted with is still there with my changed perception of the overseer. Feels more like a prison now that many can’t escape.
They absolutely are aware. There’s even squabbles if people find fediverse confusing, so people in different ways are making attempts to leave. But, some just don’t even want to try, and turned on the mods for daring to close the subreddit for lot of places I was subscribed to, since even a couple days was way too long for them. I do get it, since they really don’t want to lose the community they’ve been attached to over the years.
I think where it fell apart is that there wasn’t a united front on alternatives set forth by lot of mods from the beginning, so it became apparent early on that those who left would be leaving for fractured destinations on their own to try and form new internet homes. Which was why there started to be a split between people who wanted to stay on reddit no matter what and others who had decided to leave reddit and kept hoping and pushing mods to find a new home so some members of the community would be able to leave together.
I’ll admit it was confusing and kind of scary when all the API stuff was announced about what just a month ago? We are still in the early phases so we probably just need to give it time to let it play out but that is weird what you mentioned about people turning on the mods. I guess to an extent it’s not surprising though. Once I learned about the viable options (Lemmy, kbin, mastodon, etc) I really took on a gung-ho attitude toward finding my new digs and am happy to see it flourishing.
Even if they did reverse the whole API decision, I wouldn’t go back now that we have Lemmy. It’s simply superior to what Reddit was.
