Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday he is sending National and Florida State Guard troops to Texas to help that state put up razor wire fences on the southern border, a move in apparent defiance of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the contentious immigration issue.

DeSantis said it would be the “first-ever deployment” for the State Guard, a force he re-established in 2022 after being defunct for 75 years.

But Florida law says the State Guard, which reports directly to the governor, is to be used “exclusively within the state,” and a proposed bill to allow out-of-state deployments has not been passed by the Legislature.

DeSantis spokesman Jeremy Redfern did not respond to a request for comment on the use of the State Guard outside of Florida.

Biden should call their bluff. Letting Abbott and DeSantis make these little shows of defiance using actual troops and law enforcement personnel only emboldens the right. That has to be a red line.

He should call their bluff and force them to allow thousands of illegal crossings per day without doing anything about it? That’s the right move, in your opinion?

Isn’t there a plaque at the Statue of Liberty saying something like:

Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

The US and Canada were literally started by immigration, grown by it. Before these two countries were born it belonged to First Nations and the wild. The attitude of ‘fuck you I got mine’ is classic boomer and why society is so fucked today. If they weren’t so rightfully scared of ICE they’d be taxpayers, adding even more value to the country than just their labour and culture alone.

Many of them do pay taxes, via shared SS numbers, but can never claim the benefits.

They’re helping pay for the boomers’ social security right now.

I feel like that’s gotta be a scam on the employer side where it benefits the employer only…

They get used to sign up for cell phones and cable TV too. The businesses all know which SS# are shared, but don’t care because they pay on time.

Those folks should be taken in, processed, housed as appropriate (if they have status), or deported.

We claim to be the best country on the planet, let’s act like it. Dominate the immigrant issue.

Imo, build a service-to-citizenship path, for those that don’t already have standing. These people want to build a life. Let them. And let America benefit TRANSPARENTLY from their effort. Make a new civilian conservation corps, and help bring America into a new public works era.

With nothing but a command he could stop this. Instead he lets the proto fascist leaders to practice deploying troops throughout America. Why do you think they’re practicing this during an election year? Biden is letting the practice couping.

You’re arguing the opposite point of the person to whom I was responding, but you seem to have the same overall goal. You both sound like you want Biden to seem ineffective about the border no matter what he does. Either you aren’t able to follow the thread of discussion or you are arguing in bad faith. In either case, you should be aware that your stated position in this context puts you in league with people you seem to oppose.

I personally do not care about illegal crossings, it does not affect me in the slightest. Immigration is a net positive for the country imo, and I really don’t care about if it happens the “right way” or not. Fuck borders shit is a scam.

The right move is for the GOP clowns in Congress to actually agree to do something about it. That said, the idea that nothing is being does is just plain idiotic. There are around 20,000 border patrol agents. What exactly is it you think they spend their time doing?
