Well that’s out of left field. I suppose that’s a testament to how well they’ve done to keep their private life private.

An interesting historical parallel, Pierre Trudeau was the first PM to be divorced while in office.

I care about this as much as I care about the divorce of any other people I do not know. It is none of my business and it does not matter to me.

For his family’s sake, I hope he chooses not to step down for the next election. Milhouse is going to run with this, and will not hesitate to fight dirty.

Wouldn’t it be better for pp if Trudeau didn’t step down? I feel like there are a lot of cheap shots just waiting to be taken. It would be a good reason to let Freeland take over and maybe bring some of anti Trudeau crowd back to their senses; if that is possible…

Yeah, the F🍁ck Trudeau crowd wouldn’t skip a beat.

Lol. The flag flyers are a lost cause. But I know a few people with variable mortgages who blame him for the high interest rates now. I’m sure there are a lot of people like that who would listen to pp’s lies.

I’m not sure I agree, cheap shots regarding the separation would likely land well with the voter base that was only ever going to vote blue, but it’s not likely to win points in the moderate crowd. And those moderates are who the conservatives need to convince if they want to get into power.

If that’s the case he should have agreed not to. I don’t see him making it through another election with how much baggage he’s got now after two terms.

I will predict either a conservative minority or ndp minority, no idea which way it will swing but I think both sides have had enough of the liberal “middle ground”.

I heard rumors a few years ago that they were already separated. Weird that they’re supposedly going on a family vacation right after announcing that they’re separating.

It is weird only in that if they are not going to socially separate, all this tells us is that they have decided to separate their assets. Is that worth announcing? Were we otherwise going to be alarmed if Sofie opened a new bank account in her own name?

In Ontario, you have to be separated (defined as living apart) for a year before you can get a divorce. There are exceptions for abuse and adultery, but this is the first legal step on the road to divorce. Whenever possible, it’s best to keep it as amicable as possible when children are involved. That can still include going on vacations together.

What the fuck? Actually? What’s the reasoning there? That seems unusual to me.

Ontario family law is written around the idea that women are helpless. Nonsensical by today’s standards, but in a historical context, where things like job options for women were limited to non-existent, it becomes a little more understandable.

Given that, the idea is that a year of separation allows demonstration that a woman is able to separate from her husband. The state wants to ensure that she isn’t going to be discarded to the streets where she will be left to be burden on society. If that test fails, she remains the “man’s problem.”

Why are we in Ontario intent to hang on to such sexist views? Well, it’s Ontario, land of conservatism. It took until the year 2000 for Toronto to finally give up being dry (in the prohibition sense)! We’re the Arab state of the west.

Typically one will spell out the division of assets in a separation agreement. That can be done at any time. You can even write up such an agreement when you are at the peak of marital bliss if you really wanted, although it might be unusual.

They seem to be happy to maintain a relationship, even if just for the kids, so there is no social division.

Divorce doesn’t really mean much – other than allowing you to get married again, I suppose. It’s a pretty handwavvy concept to begin with.

Well, not really. There had been talk of her spending a lot of time at Harrington Lake when the PM was not there. I suspect they were semi-separated before this announcement.

I guess he’s not stepping down as a leader of the LPC.

E: As in, maybe the political work was tough on the family and they expected him to stop doing it at some point, which did not arrive.

For what it’s worth, a friend of mine that used to work in a chain of high-end hotels had the Trudeaus as guests, and she said that Sophie treated everyone like trash.
