I’m seeing a lot of this 25th amendment talk and everything, but couldn’t Dems just pull their Biden as their nomination? The DNC was able to fuck Bernie six ways from sunday, shouldn’t they just be able to say, “actually, we’re not going with Biden, we choose this other fuckin guy?” or is it just somehow too late for that?

The problem is that theu know Kamala Harris will be absolutely demolished if they run her. And they kinda have to run the VP if they realize they can no longer run the president.

          They can, but would they?

Liberals have always been about the letter of the law (when it suits them), and I really don’t think they would here. They’re far too busy thinking of how they can pin it on Biden falling apart at the seams and all the money they’re gonna make fundraising during Trump 2.

Newsom has been setting this up for a while. I was talking about it in the news thread. Whether other dem factions will go for it though is anyone’s guess. Supposedly there’s a pretty broad faction in the House that wants Gretchen Whitmer.

Honestly, she doesn’t seem terrible. She seems better than Newsom but I doubt she’d win due to coming out of nowhere and being a woman. Also since she’s just a governor I haven’t had my opinion of her tainted by her inevitably dogshit foreign policy.

Biden would likely be resentful and attempt to run as independent which would split the vote. He’s paid his dues and won’t allow anyone to take his reward

I’m not sure they can but only because the president is head of the party right? If he agrees to stand down though then they can do whatever the fuck they like, voters and selfies be dammned.

In one excruciating early moment — while trying to advertise his administration’s efforts to cap the prices of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries — Biden said that he had been “making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I’ve been able to do with … the Covid … excuse me, with, um, dealing with everything we have to do with … uh … look … if … we finally beat Medicare.”

They can nominate whoever they want, it just takes a rules change, and that requires a majority vote. This is an emergency. The pilot is unconscious. Grab the controls, or the plane will hit the mountainside.

Democrats spent the entire four years of Trump’s presidency studying the 25th Amendment and trying to figure out how to get it applied to kick Trump out for being incoherent

Now that their boy has brain matter dripping from his ears, they suddenly forgot about the 25th and oh no, the president has to cooperate and decide to step down himself

On the other hand, they’re right

On the other, this is an electoral decision, innit… and this is going to end up as the ‘oh, I was always opposed to Joe Biden becoming…’ face-turn…

But they’d need the president’s cooperation

Yeah, uh, ogey… good luck with that, I guess…

Considering the potential image disaster and other repercussions of changing a candidate in this way, and the impression it would give of internal democracy, do you think any other candidate has a chance of winning the White House in the elections?

      Considering the potential image disaster

There is no more “Potential”? The image disaster is already here, the mainstream media has already said Biden needs to go, you are outside your mainstream bubble and out of step with your liberal political peers

and the impression it would give of internal democracy

What democracy? Everyone already knows this election is a false binary, the wishes of the population are not being respected or even considered at all, the current “impression” out there (which is based in reality) is that this country is descending into fascism and collapse conditions

do you think any other candidate has a chance of winning the White House in the elections?

You know who definitely doesn’t have a chance as of last night? Joe Biden

      Biden wasn’t democratically chosen anyway.

But regardless, just about any candidate would probably have a better chance than Biden. It still wouldn’t be a good chance, but it would be better.

Adam Schiff would be my pick. He’s relatively young, high-profile for name recognition, and very generic/inoffensive. In an election against a polarizing candidate like Trump that might do it.

the impression it would give of internal democracy

Eight years ago trump won the presidency, despite most people voting for Hillary. How can anything give a worse impression of democracy then the winner getting fewer votes then the loser?

Edit: unless you’re talking about the democracy within the democratic party, not within the US. In that case just pretend I’m going on a nice little side tangent about US democracy.

do you think any other candidate has a chance of winning the White House in the elections?

      Lets rank them by possibility

Vice President Kamala Harris. I see her losing a la 2016 just being an absolute dipshit campaigner and ultimately being a really unpopular and offputting person.

Governor Gavin Newsom. He’s basically a nobody with no publicly stated national beliefs. He looks like a slimeball and is one too. Would lose any or all of the eastern swing states, simply because he didnt have enough time to zero in on what he actually stood for.

First Lady Michelle Obama. She actually has a decent chance at winning, but why on earth would she want to? People know who she is, she’s well liked by suburbanites and elites. But would she be able to actually go high when confronted by media, or when Trump calls her a man on stage and points at her photoshopped pelvic bulge? I dont know what that looks like but it does feel like something that could happen lathe-of-heaven

Bernie Sanders. He was also too old in 2020 but I have a feeling that if he gunned for the nom and didnt get it and actually split from the party it would finally destroy it. Please do it grandpa. He wont but I can pray for it.

Elizabeth Warren. Same schtick as Kamala but also looks old and white. runs and the only black person to vote for her is uncle Ruckus

Pete Buttigieg. Wins when the CIA totally dissolves the fiction of american democracy and just suspiciously kills trump. If not wins the electoral college but not the popular vote. Or just fails to get a campaign organized after the convention.

Gretchen Whitmer is probably the most likeable, somewhat recognizable person they could run. She’s still a centrist, but had some halfway decent policies as governor. I imagine the DNC would see her see as a compromise with the “progressive” wing, bullshit as that may be. That could be exactly what stops them from picking her, though. Also she’s a woman. On the other hand, there was the whole kidnapping plot which if they were smart, they could really milk as proof of Trump being a threat to democracy, their favorite talking point. I think she’s the high profile dem who would be perceived most favorably next to Trump. Shes also from the Midwest, which has all the key swing states they need to win, including her own. Gavin Newsom, the runner up, has name recognition, but he also has sleazy used car salesman vibes. Kamala would eat shit
