RDJ built the house of MCU, but now he has to maintain it as well? The man was in something like 9 movies over 10 years. He did his bit for king and country. But because too much of post-end game had been low quality, gotta bring back ol’ reliable.

Not like pre endgame it was fucking teeming with quality, most of the mcu is watchable once inoffensive, appeal to everyone stuff that’s competently made.

The only movies i have genuinely wanted to rewatch pre endgame are Thor Ragnarok, Infinity war, and maybe Iron man, that’s it, the rest is just not worth revisiting and even iron man if I never see it again I won’t feel like I missed out.

Ragnarok i have watched like 4 times and I could rewatch it again, infinity war is really good too and is worth rewatching, endgame is too much fan service moments but still okay.

I believe that’s the Deadpool movies weakness: you’ll barely remember the movie/plot; the cameos are the best part, but they’re really not movies you’d want to watch a second time. You may watch it out of boredome, but that’s it. I watched Deadpool last night and was both entertained and amazed by the cameos, but that’s it.

I’m not deeply familiar with the lore/canon. Is there any instance in the comics that Tony Stark becomes Dr. Doom? If not, is this Marvel getting desperate with their waning popularity by trying to bring back RDJ just to straight up play a different character? That’s a new low.

Dr. Doom has become Iron Man, so there’s that. In this case it might just be same actor two roles. Remember that Doom wears that mask because his face is all fucked up; it’s likely that they could just have RDJ play the role without any Iron Man connections at all.

      Update: also there’s this: https://youtu.be/5Jv-HopDBV4?si=052HgQB2WQJhtvRT

I’d like to invite you to watch V for vendetta. A good actor can do magic even behind a mask!

Edit: I’m not sure how Downey Jr would perform, just want to point out that a mask alone is not a blocker for a great performance.

You are absolutely correct, I love that movie. The chances of Disney being able to pull off anything even half as good however are basically nonexistent. That would require them to make something where the audience has to think, something risky, something potentially divisive.

Marvel is the epitome of visually impressive, but safe, inclusive movies for all audiences. Even the ones who are on their phones for half the movie.

Sometimes this is exactly what I’m looking for but it’s not really comparable to V for Vendetta.

If Disney spend the big bucks on RDJ they’re gonna want to show him off to draw in audiences.

I’m not well versed with lore but “What If: Iron Man: Demon in an Armor” has Tony and Victor swap bodies. It happens when they are younger so they have different paths and that story isn’t the one that is going to be told here, but… technically yes.

But also keep in mind it’s fine for the MCU to do things a little different. In Multiverse of Madness we was the “Illuminati” in a way similar to existing material, but still wholly unique. Additionally we got characters like Mordo who get new arcs and growth that differs from any existing media

While I do expect this to be a little desperate on Marvels part, they’re also bringing back the Russo brothers, I think it’s also a way to bring hype back to Marvel and the idea of the multiverse. The future is mutants and Secret Wars will be a great way to get that going so I think we’re going to speedrun it and a cheesy strat like bringing back RDJ is a way to do that.

In terms of story I don’t think they’re going to ignore that he played Tony Stark/Iron Man. If we’re going to play with the Multiverse (and we are) then a variant of Tony is fair game.

IIRC, there is a multiverse timeline where Tony becomes Dr. Doom. Considering how they’re really playing into/opening up the multiverse and with Secret Wars also coming, I’m actually really stoked for this.

Maybe, idk, it seems they’ve been bouncing from 1 nearly avoided apocalypse to another with incursions etc. since end game. So maybe, I just think it’d be one of the cleaner ways to reintroduce all of the marvel characters now that they have them all again minus full rights to Spidey.

This is the most comicbook thing ever, and you guys should chill out.

Yes, Marvel movies are bad lately, but the Infinity Saga is a masterpiece of cinema (with its very-high highs and mediocre-at-worst lows) that no one but MarvelStudios has been able to pull off. Maybe they can do it again.

Also RDJ is an amazing actor and he will very probably do a brutal job at making us all forget Tony Stark even existed.

This decision was made with the money in mind, not cinema; this applies ti Disney and RDJ, so I don’t expect a great production. Disney was desperately looking to bring the original cast back somehow, and RDJ has previously talked shit about his Marvel movies…

I see it more like in comicbook stories, where people just love a character so much that they end up bringing them back in the most bizarre way.

This is basically the meta-version of that. And I am in.

I’m not into comics, but I have read something about wolverine. The reason I avoid comics is exactly the same problem the MCU is facing: stories don’t really have an impact: theres an infinite number of universes they can write about, and even in the base timeline, they bring back dead heroes; what’s even the point?!

I’ve read/watched some content from people that would be more knowledgeable about comics/DC/Marvel saying that that’s actually one of the issues comics have been facing: their audience loves X or Y character AS IS, and they don’t allow it to either develope beyond what has been written, or don’t want to see him/her retire/die…

I don’t know if this is the true state of the industry, but watching the MCU struggle makes me believe it does: they brought back RDJ because they can’t think of a solution to the hole they dug themselves into.

That’s part of their problem. How do you keep the Avengers going with a different group, or have a new group that’s totally not the Avengers? I’m definitely not a fan of all the multiverse stuff - that’s where I stopped reading the comics and it’s pretty much there for the movies

That was the potential with Guardians of the Galaxy - very different from Avengers, with very different situations. They could have been something, but maybe they’ve had their run.

I would watch another Eternals movie, but I hope they’d keep it independent.

One of the biggest mistakes in my opinion. They sent him off and closed the chapter so well that it was fitting. To rip him back because they’re struggling to make anything half as decent is a cop out and tarnishes the franchise.

I understand comicbook characters die and come back all the time but the multi generational audience that was apart of that experience can never watch end game again as that emotional good bye to the last decade is now gone.

It is most likely damage control because the Kang thing was derailed due to Kang’s actor being an abuser. RDJ is now a known and reliable actor for the MCU who is able to play a character like Doom and will most likely never show his actual face on acreen. It would be like Josh Brolin reprising Cable in Deadpool now that it is part of the MCU even though he was already Thanos.

As long as Doom’s voice is modulated enough that it doesn’t sound like Iron Man it should work out fine.

So, he’s Doom from another timeline / universe where he’s not(?) Tony Stark but Victor von Doom, a genius inventor who creates a suit of power armor to rule over a small country with high tech secrets (Wakanda/Latveria) and there’s no Stark in that universe, it’s just a What If remix merged into the MCU main timeline?

MCU (616) Tony Stark is dead dead. Pushing up the daisies. Pining for the fjords. Most we might get are flashbacks, alternate versions (until they close up the multiverse thing with the next two Avengers films), and possibly an AI voiced by RDJr in Ironheart.

This Doom might be an alternate version of Stark, or we might never get to see his face, or we might simply get a “yeah, this is my face, deal with it” lampshade as we got with James Rhodes and are going to get with Thunderbolt Ross.

(I’m not even convinced he’ll last for more than the two Avengers films… alternate Doom comes to 616 for reasons, does his thing, leaves. Local 616 Doom then doesn’t need much of an introduction, can be played by someone younger and cheaper.)

My current running theory is that the plot might be him as a doom clone and they were planning on trucking viewers like they did with Mysterio in Far From Home (unless those viewers knew the character, of course) but for whatever reason they believed the hype is better than the shock after the fact. Maybe trying to deal with decreasing viewership or something.
