American voters keep on voting for less immigration and our politicians keep on rewarding us with more.

Vance has a point there. You can think that nativism is selfish and bigoted (and I’m inclined to think so, as an immigrant myself) but you can’t deny that it is popular. It appears to be the main driving force of the resurgence of the far right across the Western world. Opposing nativism may be what one’s principles demand but it doesn’t help win elections, especially when the widespread perception is that pretty much anyone who wants to can just walk into the country.

The current state of the Mexican border and the current policy towards asylum seekers are an anchor holding the Democrats back. They can still win and anyway it’s too late now to change the situation before the election, but it would have been helpful if Biden had gotten it under control years ago.

I’m a 3rd generation from an immigrant family and absolutely support controlled immigration, even a lot of it. There seems to be often presented or perceived this false choice between no immigration and completely uncontrolled open borders. The conversation needs more subtlety, but Harris does at least seem to many to have some baggage related to the border the last three years.

“Controlled” is the right world. I think the perception that the federal government cannot or will not control immigration is hurting the Democrats more than the immigration itself. Ideally the immigrants entering the USA would only be the ones specifically chosen by the federal government.

Well, just to give a different, albeit also wrong, perspective (from a middle-european society):
Anyone that emigrated to the US after 1850 is not a native…so 70% of y’all are immigrants.
For me it is always a bit hilarious to read how immigrants are bitching about not letting too many immigrants in “their” country.

And as i said… I know my point is wrong to start with, but i am honest and aware about my biased view. Something more people should or could be.
