A divided Supreme Court has struck down affirmative action in college admissions, declaring race cannot be a factor and forcing institutions of higher education to look for new ways to achieve diverse student bodies.

As I understand it, the University of California system (where AA was abolished via a statewide vote in 2020) has basically switched to using economic background.
Yeah. The main issue being that poverty and race, while correlated, aren’t perfect reflections of each other.
Add on top of that the UC system’s funding woes and increased focus on out-of-state (and international) students to fill funding gaps and there you go.
