A group of 111 OB-GYNs in Texas released a letter to elected state leaders Sunday urging them to change abortion laws they say have prevented them from providing lifesaving care to pregnant women.

“Josseli Barnica and Nevaeh Crain should be alive today,” the doctors wrote in their letter. “As OB-GYNs in Texas, we know firsthand how much these laws restrict our ability to provide our patients with quality, evidence-based care.”

In 2021, Texas lawmakers passed a law prohibiting doctors from performing an abortion after six weeks. The law allows members of the public to sue doctors or anyone who helps perform an abortion for $10,000.

The only way that’s happening is a change in leadership.

Unfortunately, that’s going to come down to GOP members losing a wife, mother, or daughter, and even then, they hate women so much that might not be enough.

There’s an election coming up, and there’s state and local seats up for grabs. We can’t flip Texas in a single cycle, but these goons didn’t get where they are all at once, either.

That won’t happen because when a GOP member or their family needs an abortion, they get sent off to a state where it’s legal for it to be done.

Reproductive rights for me but not for thee,

Slow down, my friend. First, recognize that women have and do vote Republican, too. As their friends or other women in their communities have to deal with horrible situations that are even vaguely similar to these, you can imagine how quickly their views are going to shift.

Actually, you don’t even have to imagine it. You can just look at some of the data we’ve seen from early voting around the country. It turns out that when you have laws that f*** over women in obvious and horrible ways, a lot of women react negatively to it. A fair amount of men, too.

Vote. That’s the only way to make any change. Republican Party is so far gone, there is no hope they will listen to any pleas or letters from experts

Well no, that’s the second way to make change. There are two other boxes after that.

I’ve never read The Handmaid’s Tale or seen its adaptation but I think I’ll pick it up after seeing these recent developments.
