I watched this speed chess game live and the move blew my mind.
Spoiler
35.Qxg6+!!
Two exclams is a brilliant move. Discovered checks can be nasty and that’s true here. The discovered checks of the bishop are devastating.
White’s move blew my mind but after I saw that - I could easily see this very simple continuation: check, kill the bishop, check, kill the queen and it’s effectively game over.

Daniel Naroditsky is one of the best speed chess players in the world. And he’s been on a roll recently.
Why aren’t we using lichess
pawn g2 takes king g1; pawn h6 takes king h7
the rules only exist to keep the monarchy in power, throw off your chains
White should Read settlers
White should read Fanon
Naroditsky is streaming right now - https://www.chess.com/member/danielnaroditsky
There’s a 15s ad in the intro and then it’s ad-free. If he’s doing well and he’s in a good mood - he’ll keep going. He might stream another ~4+ hours or it might be over soon. I have no idea.
start blasting
Windmill go brrr
I don't get it, I am bad at chess and maybe I'm misreading the notation
if you take the black rook with the white queen can’t the black king just take your queen? what prevents it
I forgot to mention the most helpful advice - the board at the link is interactive.
Yes, but
___ then white takes the pawn at g7 and keeps the black king in perpetual checks while taking a pawn, the bishop and the queen. Black is left with no pieces and down a pawn.
Answer
36.Qxg6 Kxg6
37.Rxg7## = checkmate
Does that answer your question?
You don’t take with the king, bxg6. But that leads to a windmill which loses all pieces lol
What’s to stop the king from taking the queen though?
Nothing. But then white moves the rook to g7 (protected by the bishop, so can’t be taken by the king) and checkmates instantly
This is why I hate this game lol.
After seeing this, I wonder how the game would have proceeded if Black had foreseen the move and accepted the rook’s loss:
- … Rxg4
White could still do Qxg4 to take the rook but then the discovered check is averted and Black is free to move
This is why I’m not a GM
