I saw somewhere that, instead of attaching images directly to Lemmy posts, you should instead post them to a Pixelfed instance and link to it. If a lot of people did that, it should reduce the load on Lemmy instances. I made a Pixelfed account so I could do that, but I don’t like that people have to click through to see the image. For some ridiculous reason I kinda thought the image would show without having to do that lol. Are those the only two possible options, or am I missing something?

I believe you should be able to post to Lemmy from the Pixelfed instance, rather than just posting a link to the post. E.g., from Pixelfed, I believe you can just do something like post to @chat@lemmy.one and it will magically show up here, as being posted by your Pixelfed account.

But failing that, you can just use imgur or whatever other host you trust to host images.

In a perfect world, I think we’d all have access to something like IPFS and the image wouldn’t have to live in one particular place.

Ohhh, I see! Still getting the hang of this federation stuff, that sounds like a good solution. I also realized I could use a direct link to the image file on Pixelfed and that does seem to show up as if it were uploaded to the post itself, I think? As opposed to the share link of the Pixelfed post that the image is in, which is what wasn’t working.

You could ask for the feature from the developers.
