That doesn’t happen. This is a favorite talking point of farmers who live in a desert in the middle of California when the government doesn’t subsidize their farms as much as they want for more profits.
Fucking farmer propaganda. The Newsom isn’t responsible for this bun fuckery. That’s entirely the talking point of the giant corporate farms paying for ads to sway the idiots. The reality is that farms pay pennies for multiple Olympic sized pools worth of water. A home in the state that doesn’t dump water all over dirt and do nothing for months has to pay a hundred, at least, each month. Farms need to pay their fair share.
It’s only 50x of the water that residences are consuming is properly priced. Other places with much more water available pay more than Southern and central Californians pay.
I thought it was because Gavin Newsom hordes water like he’s Immortan Joe.

Apparently farmers have been paying $20 for an acre foot of water since… 2011.
That is about 325,900 gallons of water, for $20.
https://www.ladwp.com/account/customer-service/water-rates/schedule-residential
Meanwhile, if you live in a house in LA, you are charged $2.095 for every 748 gallons of water.
325,900 / $20 = 16,295 gallons of water for $1
748 / $2.095 ~= 357 gallons of water for $1
So…farmers use 80% of the water, and are charged 45.6x less per gallon than an LA resident.
Or, a farmer pays about ¢2.2, or $0.022 to recieve the same amount of water an LA resident pays $1.00 for.
Literally pennies on the dollar level subsidy.
Hey now, stealing water from the Owens Valley ain’t cheap /s

My whole comment doing the math was inspired by me hearing people saying stuff like this, thinking it must be hyperbole…
Your statement technically is, an olympic swimming pool is about 660k gallons…
That would cost a farmer about $40.
But it would cost an LA resident about $1850.
Fucking bonkers.
Like… I can see some level of subsidy, but not nearly 50x.

Or maybe don’t grow stupid shit like almonds and alfalfa where the majority is exported
if it’s an export crop, it’s like exporting the water itself.

Aren’t farmers the salt-of-the-earth types, just trying to feed our population?
More like the common clay of the new west
Oh…morons.
