That’s not the issue though, Photoshop doesn’t have a native Linux version.
Using wine to run heavy productivity apps can be very troublesome and buggy
did they ban that stuff over in lemmy.world?
Yeah. Banned due to liability of the admins getting sued by big corp for hosting. It was really fun reading both sides. Some users pissed and threatening to leave the server. Others agreeing with the decision calling the opposing users whiny and asking why did you even join one of the biggest servers then? 10/10 recommend reading the threads.
lemmy.world users are kind of NPCs tbh
Lick my balls.

yeah, must suck for the world pirates. I am waiting for native transfer of accounts on lemmy.
Apparently there are third party apps now that can do it somehow, but I don’t know how reliable they are.
I just made a new account and delt with it. But yeah it was a pain
Yeah because it’s evil and illegal and stuff, and everyone knows that a illegal stuff needs to be banned by unrelated admins what is an entirely different website.
there are quite a few people who don’t know you were being sarcastic. Either that or they agree with the admin’s decision.
Pirated Photoshop doesn’t have the AI shit though which is sooooooo good
I just get my work to pay for my Adobe subscription
It doesn’t? Lol
I pirated Photoshop just in case but genuinely haven’t used it more than twice so idk
Not the last I checked. Try content aware fill, does it give you the generate AI prompt?
AI stuff works on my copy of ps2021.
there’s a limitation on amount of ai usage (per ip?) for signed off users tho
The struggle is real
“UMMM what the fuck is that, anon?”
“it’s a great open-source software called mind your own fucking business”
Leaving me alone is free (not soybicycle free, North Korea free)
Open inkscape Draw circle Export bmp Open as layers 😹
The magic of Linux workflow.
Why BMP. GIMP can deal with SVGs, no?
It can open SVGs as raster images, but I never managed it to look great. It’s better to export to a BMP from an SVG editor.
“I don’t have photoshop”
Problem solved
a lot of school provide ps ‘for free’ and expect everyone to use it
I see you went to reach schools… Lucky you, mine didn’t even provided toilet paper
Iirc the Education version of Photoshop is free. Schools don’t need to pay a penny for it.
The laptop/pc able to run it… And someone able to use it.
I don’t see my old school being able to provide neither of them.
You all guys attended nice schools, sounds great!
In that case, anon should have just figured out a way to run it before the class started
A student being proactive?
Where do you think we are?
anon decided to bring linux to the classroom, but didn’t go all the way by making sure things actually work
“Wow anon you can run it on THAT?”
It’s a joke
Photopea or the mobile version of photoshop
you can’t draw a circle in gimp?
There’s no “Shape” tool. You could just select a circular area in an empty layer and fill it though.
No. The meme was because there was a bug that made drawing some circles go all wonky.
You can, it is very unintuitive though. You draw the shape using the eilpse tool and set a border for the selection.
It’s not hard, but there is really no way to figure this out without ever looking for a tutorial.
It’s absolutely stupid design and more difficult than it needs to be.
I’ll say it - Photoshop is infinitely more intuitive than gimp for the average person. Sure, if you are fucking determined, I’m sure you can figure it out eventually. You can even make it work. But if you say it is easier than Photoshop, you are wrong.
I love FOSS stuff but way too many people are delusional about the pros and cons of it. There are absolutely cons.
I stand with op.
I don’t believe that you can even figure out half of the things yourself if you are determined. There is no way you can use it without looking up tutorials for even basic things.
I fully agree in case my precious comment wasn’t clear. It is a mess!
All this time I was using the ellipse tool, filling it, then shrinking my selection and deleting.
Ah well, I learned Inkscape recently and it’s a better tool for stuff like that anyway.
GIMP 2 is utter dogshit in terms of user experience.
GIMP 3, the version that is supposed to make everything easier, hasn’t been released yet. ^(it’s been years and I have given up hoping)
The situation sucks, but there aren’t that many developers working on GIMP in the first place. Certainly not as many as Photoshop.
It’s genuinely not easy, but that’s because it’s a powerful tool that can change some aspects about drawing a circle.
Lmao this is the better of the two pastas
Ellipse select tool (E) with shift (and optionally ctrl) pressed after starting the drag -> Edit menu -> Stroke Selection
Gave me a stroke reading this, thanks Stallman.
Well, see GIMP is Gnu Image Manipulation Tool, not Image Creation Tool. And Linux philosophy is to do one thing well. So give GIMP a break for doing the other things poorly and with shit UX.
Actually GIMP is not UNIX, ur supposed to write out vector graphic coordinates with sed and then pipe them with the terminal onto this minimal C program that pre-renders the image into a SVG, and then start a cronjob which regulary checks if…
For some reason I do find GIMP easier to use them photoshop tho
“Software I’m used to is easier for me than software I have no experience with.”
What a fantastic insight.
GIMP being free to just download from their site, and still being used far less (even by novices) than paid or pirated Photoshop really tells the whole story.
The average lemmy user compared to the general public is just far more used to trading away quality to stay with Free and Open-Source Software, to the point of sometimes apparently being blind to the mainstream option’s appeal.
“Whatever I use is objectively better and y’all just blind and an average hivemind bot”
Intuitiveness is objective and measurable, and I’m very certain that Photoshop would demolish GIMP if a test was done.
“intuitiveness is objective and measurable” is such a hilarious thing to say. Like yes it’s possible to measure how quickly people can come to understand an app but to say that, therefore, we have an objective understanding of ‘intuitiveness’ and can say “Hamburger menu instead of kebab menu here??? That is O B J E C T I V E L Y unintuitive” is sooo fucking silly.
You know what’s actually silly? GIMP.
Not really objective in real life. There is no abstract human in a vacuum, everyone has some previous knowledge and biases. If you ever had to train a grown up how to use a mouse and the ever illusive concept of double click, you know that even with some level of skeuomorphism there is a trouble at grasping new concepts, and if we go into more complicated territory, all bets are off. Maybe for a blank slate without any prior experience existing in society and operating tools, there are some high level abstract concepts, but for a real person, intuitiveness basically means “looks familiar to a something that I personally have seen before”
Intuitiveness is as objective as color perception.
Krita is much better than GIMP if you want to stick to FOSS
Something being free to download doesn’t help if the paid software is so ingrained into culture, both popular and professional, that it practically has a monopoly. If you want to get work as an artist working with other people, you’ll want to learn the industry standard, not a niche program.
That’s all aside from whether gimp actually is or isn’t better, I just think the argument make no sense.
You would imagine this to be obvious, but people who are used to Photoshop or Reddit complain all the time that Gimp or Lemmy are not as intuitive, as the other comments fully demonstrate.
I am the same. I tried Photoshop and bazillion of tools didn’t help when making a simple picture, while GIMP could do that with relatively easier steps.
Edit: grammar, apologies.
This seems true though, Gimp uses the same (fairly complex) tools for most thing Photoshop has an own tool for. Have to commit I’m not that experienced with PS though
I fuckin love GIMP ngl
I stopped using GIMP and started using https://www.photopea.com/. You get most Photoshop features for free (ad-supported) in a familiar interface and without having to install a large slow application.

I would rather eat my entire laptop than intentionally view an ad.
Adblock homie. Not one ad on photopea
I don’t get this. Why not support the developers? No one ever donates so this is the next best thing
Photopea is amazing. Its 90% a clone of PS and is sooo much better than gimp.
I used it today to remove a white background on some of our icons to get a transparent png.
It was as easy as going i to the layer options, blend options, and drag the slider. It even has the option that you can hold alt and split the slider in 2 to get transparency blend as a gradient.
This would be a nightmare in gimp, and photopea does it non destructively. And since its a web app you dont even have to install anything. Amazing.
Nightmare is a bit hyperbolic I’d say. From memory, use the magic wand tool, select the white area. Selection menu, expand by 4 or 6 pixels. Colors menu, color to alpha, pick white. Done.
Sure, this can sort of get the job done with somewhat bad results.
The icons in my case were complex, so a single click with magic wand wound not select all of the parts .
Expand by 4 blurs the icons at the edges. This is actually pretty bad, and would result in lost detail and a washed out look.
The operation in gimp is destructive, so tweaking in multiple steps is not really possible, and creates a bad workflow.
No, Gimp is terrible and not up to the task at all.

Seriously though, why there is no shape tool in Gimp?
Because it’s a UX mess.
Because creative FOSS is usually terrible, their methods demolish the flow of an average creative worker with constant "No, it doesn’t work like that "-type interruptions.
Intuitive functionality is never a priority and never done right. If anything it seems to be viewed as sacriliege to sacrifice clean and simple code for the base instincts of an ignorant user.
Eh? More of a GIMP-specific issue. Krita, Kdenlive, and Inkscape for example are all fantastic, not to mention Blender
Krita, fantastic? That comment might’ve convinced someone who hasn’t tried it. It does not convince me.
The fact that you mention “Kdenlive” and Inkscape along with Krita makes me expect the two others to be absolute dogshit.
I find Krita to be amazing… Did we even use the same app?
I remember finding some comments from people being pissed that Blender got an Undo function. Felt like I was living in a bizarro world.
It’s like a traditional martial art, you must first master arbitrarily complicated forms before, maybe, being able to make something useful of it it in ten years.
makes sense. same people who made emacs.
Gimp logic is a bit different from whatever logic a regular user is used to. It’s easy to work with once you familiarize yourself with it, but if your intuition is trained on Windows products, you will need to readjust.
How much does Photoshop cost now?
$20 a month, no way to buy lifetime subscription, $50 a month to get all adobe products
Until recently their Creative Cloud subscription was $12. It includes Photoshop, 1TB cloud storage, Light room and a couple of smaller tools aimed at photographers. But it got pushed up to $20 because of inflation. My yearly subscription renewed a couple of months ago for the old price, so I’m lucky for now.
But it got pushed up to $20 because of inflation.
please stop propagating this bullshit. It got pushed because of greed.
Right? If you don’t happen to live in Turkey, there’s no fucking 67% inflation.
SaaS
The end times basically
You can’t own a copy and you rent your usage by the month.
The Enshitification continues
And nobody wants to vote to stop it, because almost everyone thinks corporate copyright interests have merit.
You’ll Own Nothing and Be Happy.
It’s free if you want it to be
Really? I thought it’s cloud based nowadays and therefore csn’t be found on the high seas anymore.
I’ve pirated it several times in recent years, but you can also pirate older versions of it from before it changed to cc, unless that’s changed in the last year or 2
Yeah. Photoshop doesn’t work on Linux. Even through wine.
