The Butlerian Jihad is a concept from the Dune series. The exact nature of it is unknown, but it was some sort of conflict that resulted in the total abolishment of computers and other “thinking machines” and a religious and cultural taboo on creating any machine that thinks or emulates humans.

I coulda swore that in one of later books a conversation is actually had with the Butler lady that the jihad is named after… something about one of the “thinking” machines wondering what would happen if it killed this lady’s kid.
No no, it was Octavia Butler that abolished the machines.

Herbert was inspired by the real author Samuel Butler, and specifically the novel Erewhon, and named the Butlerian Jihad after him.
