We currently have quite a few:
- !space@lemmy.world (most active, has had federation delays in the past)
- !space@mander.xyz (active poster, topic-appropriate instance)
- !space@lemmy.ml (active poster, inactive moderator)
- !space@lemm.ee (low activity, unmoderated)
- !space@sopuli.xyz (no active posters or moderators)
Dead instances
Do each of these communities serve a distinct purpose? If not, should we consolidate some of them?
I think the ManderXYZ instance is a nice match for the topic, but I am interested to hear what others think.
I also think that mander.xyz would be a good fit. The instance administration is chill and sensible, and the instance’s scope is STEM fields.
!space@lemmy.world moderators @otter@lemmy.ca and @Bitswap@lemmy.world are active.
Thoughts on consolidation, perhaps to !space@mander.xyz?
I would be good with that. The space communities could benefit from consolidation, they’re active but spread out too much
I don’t have a preference on which one to keep, both LW and mander.xyz seem like good choices
Agreed. Consolidation would benefit the community and likely help it grow further. I don’t know much about mander.xyz, but I’m not attached to LW.
I’d be happy to continue moderating if we migrate elsewhere.
Edit: I just noticed how small mander.xyz community is, 90/month vs 4k/month.
Now that you are moderator in both, would you be able to do the following?
- Lock !space@lemmy.world by checking “Only moderators can post to this community”
- Create one final post on !space@lemmy.world announcing the consolidation to !space@mander.xyz
- Rename the community to “[Dormant] moved to
!space@mander.xyz
”
Thanks! Bitswap made the post, so we should be good to go now
Awesome! Are you planning to copy the rules from the sidebar as well, or start from scratch?
I’ve prepped one here. @Bitswap@lemmy.world, how does this look? I simplified the rules somewhat by combining related rules. Also I don’t think the astronomy picture of the day was working so I removed it and kept the link
A community to discuss space & astronomy through a STEM lens
Rules
- Be respectful and inclusive. This means no harassment, hate speech, or trolling.
- Engage in constructive discussions by discussing in good faith.
- Foster a continuous learning environment.
Also keep in mind, mander.xyz's rules on politics
Please keep politics to a minimum. When science is the focus, intersection with politics may be tolerated as long as the discussion is constructive and science remains the focus. As a general rule, political content posted directly to the instance’s local communities is discouraged and may be removed. You can of course engage in political discussions in non-local communities.

Sidebar and rules look good! Daily active users are trending upwards.
You might want to consider posting on !newcommunities@lemmy.world (as an “under new management” post) and on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca. I’d recommend spacing out the posts by a few days to reach more people.
Also, any idea what happened to Bee? Sal added Bee as a mod, Bee added you and Bitswap as mods, but now Bee’s account and comments have vanished.
I’ll wait until we finalize the community icon/banner and then make the posts :)
I’m not sure what happened to Bee, the account looks like it was deleted
As long as we don’t consolidate to .world I’m OK with it.
Agreed, we have to contain .world’s influence down to under 20% of the user share if we want the threadverse to be healthy.
They currently hold 32% of Lemmy’s monthly activity.
