What is happening in the UK?

0? Hardly. For a simple pop-culture counterpoint, V for Vendetta was written as an indictment of the UK’s slide into fascism. It was published in 1982. Fascism doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a slow boil erosion of rights and democracy that works in the shadows of government over decades to dissolve checks and balances from the inside and within the law.
The UK has been arresting people for saying offensive things for a long time. It’s just that most of the victims were on the right, and most people on the left were cheering for it. Now that the laws are being used against their side and their causes, they’re sad and outraged. It’s a tale as old as democracy: people don’t care until it materially affects them. Every time we give up rights or give governments more power, no matter how justified we think the cause today, those powers will eventually be turned against us.
Count Dankula only got an 800 pound fine and no jail time. He also wasn’t raided, and I doubt they took his fingerprints and DNA either. These people are spending a days in jail for no fucking reason.
The dog doing a Nazi salute is stupid. Really stupid. But what is happening here is that they are discussing something serious. If count Dankula was arrested for speaking about some new law or whatever it would be an entirely different case.
(New) New Labour got back in power.
Labour are meant to be the left wing workers party. Old school Labour are socialists that brought in such things as the NHS (free healthcare) and The Open University (non-elitist university education open to anybody) in the mid-1900s.
New Labour first came into power in 1997 and left in 2010, they got back in last year (2024). They are not socialist by any means. They pretend at times to be socialist because of the image and reputation of Labour but in reality they’re capitalists. These are the people that introduced privatisation into the NHS (so you can only get healthcare for certain things if you are rich enough) and started the Iraq War 2 with Bush. They have always had an authoritarian streak but the socialists still within the party generally managed to hold them off. They had plans for mass surveillance and mandatory ID cards, but never managed to implement it by the time they lost the 2010 election.
Now they’re back, and the socialist elements of the party have been shunned ot kicked out, so the authoritarians can near do as they wish now.
In one year they have:
- cut winter fuel payments for the elderly
- cut disability benefits
- continued with austerity for public services, making everyone poorer
- cosied up to banks by saying red tape needs cut
- declared nature protections to be in the way
- helped Israel commit genocide by providing equipment and intel
- proscribed a protest group that spray painted 2 planes as terrorist organisations
- given a racist speech to pander to the far right
- brought in draconian restrictions on the internet
- want a vast increase in facial recognition cameras
- announced plans to implement a mandatory digital ID

Our devolved parliament is more left wing than Westminster but it has limited powers so our sanctuary is minimal.
There’s also the times where Westminster has ruled on things that should be devolved and when it has overruled Scotland.

We had something similar here in Australia in the early 2000s, when we voted on a referendum on whether to ditch the Monarchy and become a Republic:
All of the Stay/Remain advertising focused on the message that “this [proposed] Australia’s Not The One”, and inferring that we could have another referendum in the near future with a different form of revised Government. Suffice to say, that was utter bullshit - and we haven’t revisited the topic since.
By then again, we wouldn’t even pass a referendum to allow the Aborigines a Voice in Parliament a few years ago - so we’ve probably rolled backwards also.

First time? UK going full auth mode and inspiring a vicious uprising and rebellion is one of the oldest traditions in their culture.
They were warned that Labour was fascist but like everywhere else in the wold, just ignored it or didn’t care, hell the UK nazi party (aka Reform) is polling very well and dragging Labour and Tory further right.

His arrest comes after more than 500 peaceful protesters were arrested at a demonstration in Parliament Square earlier this month for holding placards supporting the group.
Gosh, that must be expensive, protecting us all from old people with t-shirts and Facebook posts. I just hope the UK Government is remembering to keep some of the taxpayers’ money back to fund making trans people’s lives more difficult every day because JK Rowling. Then they have all the major threats covered and the British people can sleep soundly (until the police smash down the door).

Fuck that! The Lib Dems sold out all of their principles between 2010 and 2015, Nick Clegg is now a goon for Facebook, and Ed Davey is a walking joke.
The English/Welsh Greens are ineffective and TERFs, the Scottish Greens have formally unaffiliated from them because they’re so bad.
The only real hope is the Corbyn/Sultana party, whatever name it ends up going by. It is gaining traction, with genuine socialists, and even the major unions like Unite and UNISON are considering endorsing them.
The Lib Dems and Greens have existed for decades and achieved fuck all. Don’t waste your time with them, don’t split the left vote with them, support genuine socialists. Support real change.
The sad thing is Starmer has made it hard to judge.
