The cat thing pisses me off so much. I am unable to express how much I hate that some redditor will come up with a dumb joke like “all orange cats are goofy” and then it becomes an embedded, undeniable facet of reality for a staggering number of people when the joke explodes into a subreddit. Like, it’s not a joke for those people now. All orange cats are dumb and/or goofy or whatever. And this happens with so, so many things. Obviously this is a pretty innocuous manifestation of this phenomenon, but it’s the same mechanism of human thinking that leads to all manner of horrific, imagined interpretations of reality.
Another example of this is the “if you wear sunglasses indoors you’re either a blind or an asshole” joke, which I see more and more. I have light-sensitive eyes, I wear sunglasses indoors in really bright places like certain supermarkets because it helps prevent discomfort. But thanks to this dumb meme, I know there’s people who will look at me, think of the meme, and label me as an asshole for it.
Depending on the person I do wonder if they are hiding their dilated pupils and just high as fuck but you know what? Good for them if they ain’t hurting anyone. Roll on soldier.
A while back I pointed out how stereotypes about pitbulls were a way for people to sneak eugenics and race science back into the public consciousness and some motherfuckers mocked me and said I was comparing non-white people to animals…
I’ve encountered this in real life with my dog. Tell an older guy “her name is Mia” and he’ll start going on about how he could never own a female dog, like what?

I’m in the same boat but I just suffer because I’m afraid of looking weird

It’s still a great post and I put a lot of effort into providing sources and historical context. Pit Bulls, the Proletariat, and Racism. An effort post about a working class icon.
People are going to flip when they find out all humans are animals
Thank you for educating me comrade
