Like the digusting and culturally pointless little pig I am, I watch shit like this. I could give an explanation for why or justify it as some ethnographic study of early 21st century MilBro lit. but, really, i just like action sequences mixed with intrigue.
anyway, we all know this is some bottom of the barrel bullshit going in. i watched the first ep KNOWING it was going to be a turd. and it was somehow beneath my expectations.
forget the fantastical geopolitical world the production team paints as the context for their 100% unrealistic heroes to inhabit as they gruffly, but knowingly chide and affirm each other in their cargo pants, henleys, and unmarked ball caps. just the basic writing for dialogue is fucking torture, and not even the stupid politics or the exposition.
like, if you took a shot every time somebody calls somebody else “brother” you would be dead in 10 minutes. it feels completely shoehorned. like an exec fed the scrip into an LLM and prompted it to “say brother 20x more”.
so the story is nonsense, the dialogue is torture, the action sequences are somehow not interesting despite gunfire and explosions. legit all it has are some appealing establishing shots in visually interesting locales. literally, there are acreensavers i would rather watch than this, and they probably cost like 0.05% to produce.
anyway, it sucks, lmao.
yeah, i like Taylor Kitsch too. he was great in True Detective S2. i think that’s one of the things that made me open to giving it a shot.
for my own context, i watched the original season thinking it was going to be this like unreliable narrator/family annihilator story about chris pratt’s character getting a TBI overseas and losing his shit because the story was so surreal.
i think i was halfway through when i realized it was all straight up, and there wasn’t going to be any “turn” to the story like how i thought. i still think that sort of story would make for COMPELLING tv, but i guess this shit is what the factory is selling today.
to be fair, i am running out the clock on a prime subscription, so i only rarely open it up and look at what’s being promo’d.
Yea your version would be way more interesting. I mostly skip Prime because of the fun ads they’ve added but still dip back in once in a while.
Whole thing was amusing because my wife was down to keep watching but I was just like ehhh I can’t stand this.
I do think kitsch did a decent job given how horrible the show is, but it’s not enough to get me to watch more.
Bit of an acquired taste, but he was good in American Primeval on Netflix, of the revenant/western thing isn’t a deal Breaker. Also has Betty Gilpin who is usually pretty reliably good/interesting.
