2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Solarpunks!

We were so close, we nearly announced this last month, but since the instance’s founding in March 2022, 2000 accounts have been created on this server. That number doesn’t mean much beside being big and round, but it’s still fun to celebrate.

The most important numerical statistic is active users, where we’re coming up on 400/month. More important than all of that is the kind and quality of your activity on this server and across the Fediverse. We’re extremely proud of the quality of posts and level of discourse members of this server are contributing to our shared and distributed social media experiment. Thanks so much for joining us on this adventure.

🧙‍♀️ Meta Post Image Breakdown: W.I.T.C.H. ✊

On October 29, 1969, officers of the court bound Black Panther leader Bobby Seale in rope, chained him to his defendant’s chair, filled his mouth with gauze, and wrapped it tightly around his mouth and jaw. He had demanded his constitutional rights to speech and to be defended by a lawyer. The bigoted, racist, and fascist judge’s order shocked the world, inspiring outrage and protest. That Halloween, women dressed as witches organized an impromptu act of guerilla theatre:

Slowly, solemnly, the Witches filed around the Federal Building in Chicago’s Loop, faces painted white, staring straight ahead, flowing black capes swirling around them. “Our sister justice lies chained and tied,” they chanted. “We curse the ground on which she died.”

This was one of the many hexes for which the ephemeral organization known as W.I.T.C.H. is famous. The post image is a frame from the Documentary She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry (2014), of a coven in Washington D.C. performing a hex on U.S. president Richard Nixon’s inauguration on the steps of the United States Capitol building.

W.I.T.C.H. most often stands for “Women’s International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell,” but could just as easily mean “Women Inspired to Tell their Collective History,” or “Women Interested in Toppling Consumer Holidays.” This seasonal political theatre has seen a recent resurgence, adding “Welcoming Immigrants & Their Children Here” to the auspicious name.

While white facepaint and black masks were integral to the theatre in the 60’s and 70’s, a thick black veil has become popular during recent events.

The Wikipedia page for Women’s International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell is a good jumping off point if you’d like to know more.

Jane Goodall died this morning. My whole family got to see Dr. Goodall speak when she came through Chicago last month. I knew at the time that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m so grateful we got the chance before her passing.

I’m always chuffed to see what image is chosen for the monthly discussion thread, and this one is my favourite! The film still chosen is such a great mashup of whimsy and activist defiance. Thanks also for situating the image within a context of very recent histories as well as the continuation of the original spirit.

Unsure what is up with your link for !RiotPorn@slrpnk.net but it is not working from the post.

I’ve looks into it a little, and it’s working on my end. I’ve looked at the markup and can’t find any reason why it would be giving you trouble. Is anyone else having issues with it?

For reference, I am using Mlem TestFlight on iOS. When I use your link with my slrpnk.net account I get a something went wrong page. Same link with my Sopuli.xyz or piefed.social accounts and it works. Which is odd, because this account is local to the community. I even am subscribed now, and I still get the error.

Yes it does. And the link generated by Lemmy is how I got the link I added to my comment too.

It sounds like an Mlem issue. RiotPorn is not the only com link in the post body that uses bang auto-linking from Markdown. The issue probably has something to do with the title including the strings ‘riot’ or ‘porn’ and your app’s NSFW settings. @ericbandrews@lemmy.ml

Blorp dev here. There is no shared code, but I think the issue might be caused by communities that use upper case letters in their name. It seems like Lemmy considers riotporn@slrpnk.net to be the same as RiotPorn@slrpnk.net , so I’ll just lowercase it moving forward. That fixes the issue for me. It will take me a little time to get this fix into prod.

Any updates on the possible move to piefed? I was out of band for a couple of months, it’s certainly possible I missed something.

Not too much yet as I have been extremely busy with stuff away from the screen while the weather is still good.

The Piefed devs did include a way for Piefed to read passwords hashed by Lemmy with bcrypt, so that major blocker got removed.

I also did a bit of backend work for a Piefed test instance so that I can look at the database structure in more detail.

Do we have any “collapse support” (collapsesupport) community?

I think it would be a nice community to have, to get some positive vibes, ideas on what to do, gardening, etc etc, as well as just overall positivity?

Ya, doesn’t seem quite the same. Do you think a collapsesupport would be a good community to create? There might not just be a enough ppl for that. Maybe we could partner with reddits collapsesupport?

I am not very familiar with the community on Reddit, and “transplanting” communities even with support from the original Reddit mods has never really worked out well in the history of Lemmy.

But sure, if you think it adds something to our set of communities, go ahead. Just be aware that starting a community usually means you will be posting by yourself to a very small audience for quite a while 😅

There are already posts with that theme in other communities here (and on other instances), but some people might find it useful to have it all in one place. Because it would be redundant to everyone with a broader interest in off-grid living, farming, etc, you would likely be doing all or nearly all of the posting to a small audience for quite some time, as poVoq said. If you’re willing to maintain it single-handedly, go for it.
