By special request, we are doing a double feature and thus starting earlier than normal: Re-Animator (1985) at 4:45 (86 minutes long) and John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness (1994) (1h35m) at about 6:15. A lot to cram in before the night-time movies, but Re-Animator was specifically requested as it is supposed to pair well with ITMOM, and I love the original Lovecraft story, so we’re going for it!

Re-Animator (1985)

“Re-Animator is a 1985 American comedy horror film loosely based on the 1922 H. P. Lovecraft serial novelette “Herbert West–Reanimator”. “ “A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus.”

Content Warnings for Re-Animator

Violence and gore: Severe
  • cats come back to life and then are re-killed on screen. Obviously puppet

  • "Although pretty slapstick and darkly comedic in tone, the goriness of violence is amplified to be as bloody and messy as possible”

  • too much blood and gore to list here, expect it to be over the top. Expect it all — eyes, fingers, stabbings, decapitations.

sexual violence: SEVERE
  • “A woman, while unconscious and later conscious is groped and licked without her consent”

  • A woman is graphicallyremovedd by a disembodied head in the final stretch (01:08:13-01:12:44). The character herself was treated like an object for most of the movie.

  • Sexual harassment / stalking: one character admits to having kept a file and samples of hair from someone else without her knowledge or consent.

In the Mouth of Madness

DOES REALITY CAUSE YOU PAIN?

DO YOU SEE BLOOD IN THE RAIN?

LIFE GOING DOWN THE DRAIN?

THEN YOU SHOULD READ SUTTER CANE.

Another John Carpenter masterpiece. When famous horror writer Sutter Cane goes missing and misses his publishing deadline, his publisher hires an insurance investigator to find him. The search leads to the small and mysterious town of Hobb’s End — where Cane’s books are all set.

Madness ensues.

This is one of my favorite of John Carpenter’s films, and it is the one I would personally call the most disturbing and frightening. Much like The Thing, it is a movie about paranoia, but it really ups the feeling of not knowing what is real. It has some thematic similarities with The King in Yellow as well.

Content Warnings for In the Mouth of Madness:

Violence and gore: “moderate”.
  • Killings and dismemberments with axes, off-screen.

  • suicide (actual death moment is off screen but it’s pretty clear what’s going on)

  • a teensy bit of cannibalism :D

sexual harassment: moderate

A man twice has to rebuff a woman who keeps trying to kiss him

Shit-tons of gaslighting / reason to question what is and is not real.

Intense frightening and disturbing scenes, body horror.
