This article is years old now, but I have got great mileage out of sending it people who say “I’d never buy a Chinese car - the Chinese government will spy on you” like if China wants to spy on me, fine! Every other fucker does, join the party. At least the Chinese won’t sell my data like Mercedes will.

some vague statement about how China will use you to undermine our great glorious democratic republic by tricking you into hating it then the second comment states that the glorious republic is currently far worse then china in every metric
I seriously do not understand being afraid of China spying on me over ANYTHING American.
The worst a chinese device is gonna do is leak that I’m a furry leftist to my conservative family.
The worst an american device is gonna do is lead the SS to shoot me because I think we should have healthcare.
These are sooooo obviously the same we must ban chinese devices and software forever.

40 years old and never had a car. Never even got a driver’s license.
Hell yeah comrade me too (well, almost 40!)
Fuck cars.
Same comrade
I am also nearing 40 and have never owned a car, although I do have my license. Some people just can’t get heads around me preferring to use public transport.
My having my license is one of my gripes with cars. I absolutely suck at driving. When I was driving, people in my the passenger seat would pre-emptively grab the oh-shit handle as soon as I turned the key (younger folk: you used to have to turn a key to start the engine). The test was pretty much just circling a block, so I passed on my first try, which earned me decades of renewals with no retests to make sure I’m still capable of driving. Speaking of retests, had I somehow fucked up circling the block somehow, I would have had as many retests as I wanted to earn the same privilege.
It’s Official: Cars are Terrible
In my car I was able to easily remove the:
- LoJack device from the dealer
- LTE antenna it uses to phone home
With no issues. If you do the same be sure to replace the antenna with a
resistordummy load so you don’t have stray voltages floating around your electrical system.resistor
The technical term for this is a “dummy load.” Something which looks like an antenna as far as a radio is concerned, and allows for testing without transmitting any significant amount of RF. This jargon should help dig up relevant ham radio articles.
Thanks for the correction.
I would be interested in learning more about how to do this
It’s specific to the car but mine was just with the wiring under the steering wheel.
The “S” in “automobile” stands for “security”
Edit: also feeling vindicated for driving across three states to buy a 10-year old Toyota with over 100k miles on it specifically because I know the bastard will run forever and pre-dates the overwhelming majority of telemetry data collection bullshit.
My 07 toyota will be the most technologically advance car I will ever purchase. I’ll happily buy an electric car with 0 internet capabilities. Otherwise I’ll take this mf to the grave with me
they are, on the other hand, incredibly consistent at killing humans and animals
Don’t worry I hear the FSF has announced that they wish they were working on Librefying select runs of Toyota Corollas from the 1990s. Something should solve this soon.
aww man, does this mean I’m going to have to stop smooching my car?
Aww shucks aww geez aww heck
YOU might not kiss and tell, but your Honda does.
Imagine being an Uber driver and telling every customer that they must consent to possibly have data about their sex life and genetics collected before they can get in
This is a great site, never seen it before. thanks for sharing
