For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Fox and His Friends, a drama/satire from renowned German auteur Rainer Fassbinder, whose lesbian drama The Bitter Tears of Petra van Kant (1972) we previously watched. In this film, an extremely gullible gay working-class man with seemingly no social skills wins the lottery. Immediately, a bourgeois guy swoops in and pretends to be infatuated with him, using gay romance as weapon with which to manipulate the protagonist and swindle away his money. Class satire ensues. This is considered one of Fasbinder’s best films, so let’s check it out.

After that is The Haunting (1963), a horror movie, based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House, about a sinister doctor who invites three other people to a secluded, spooky mansion, under the pretense that he wants them to be subjects of a scientific study. Joke’s on them, because the house is haunted, and some spirits start eliminating them one by one. Director is Hollywood workhorse Robert Wise, the guy behind such studio fare as The Sound of Music (1965), West Side Story (1961), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). We previously watched his boxing noir The Set-Up (1949). This is considered one of his best, so we’ll give it a whirl.
