The guy is many things but unimaginative is not one of them. One of the people who really understood where technology was headed, in the worst way possible.
the first month I was packing boxes on my hands and knees on the hard cement floors. I said to the person kneeling next to me, “You know, we need kneepads because this is killing my knees,” and he said, “What we need are packing tables” — the most brilliant idea I’d ever heard. The next day I went and bought packing tables and doubled our productivity.
Bezos is sure, the engineers solved all the problems you listed. The table that doubled their productivity and led to all of these solutions Amazon solved was brought by another person as well!
Only stating the facts as I saw them roll out. Remember, Amazon took off when dial-up was the thing. The big dogs ignored the internet, and even when they dipped their toes in, they didn’t understand consumers fucking off over tiny page load times. Bezos also figured out that consumers were scared of internet purchases and pioneered the “no questions asked, no return fee” model.
Those two statements are facts, as far as I know and remember.
Ah shit. Forgot where I was. No facts lemmy don’t like.
Every other retailer at the time, brick-and-mortar or online, fucked up (eBay hung in there!), badly. Amazon isn’t telling me these tales, I watched it unfold in real time. I was starting my IT career, watching and learning, reading the news every day. El Reg FTW!
I made two points where Amazon excelled. Who else considered these and implemented/fixed them? Bezos figured out a few things that were broken and ran with it.
We could also credit the porn industry for making online credit card transactions secure. Bezos would have gone nowhere without that pioneering work. It all stacks.
Not calling the man a genius, just a man with good ideas at the right time and place who had the resources to execute. Kinda the dictionary definition of how to get rich; seed money from family or hard work, luck, brains and more hard work, all at once.
Some put together the work laid before them and rocked out. Zuckerberg took the groundwork MySpace laid, took the work he had already done, and god forbid me, “synergized” it. Stuff like that.
So, back on point, what exactly is not reality? Very few survived the dotcom bust, can’t think of another ATM. I’m sure there a few, but not like Amazon, and nothing like the monster AWS turned out to be. Counterpoints and examples?

Yes truly imaginitive!

Amazon was the first to figure out that a .5 second delay in page loading would run customers off.
Amazon was the first to realize a “no questions asked” return policy was what customer’s required.
Amazon was the first to realize that shipping times were holding other vendors back.
AWS… ah never mind. That one’s too big for a lemmy post.
So yeah, Bezos is a dumbfuck. 🙄
Do you also think Bill Gates made Windows?
AWS for instance is quite famously the brainchild of then Amazon CTO Allan Vermeulen, not Jeff Bezos.
Bezos is sure, the engineers solved all the problems you listed. The table that doubled their productivity and led to all of these solutions Amazon solved was brought by another person as well!
Nah, that’s just survivor’s bias talking.
And Bezos survived and thrived. So, what are you saying?
That there were 100 people with the same idea as Bezos but failed.
Name names. I watched Amazon roll out, though I completely missed AWS and what all went on. Still, name another online retailer that got it right.

EDIT: Peak lemmy. “NOAAW! I don’t like what you’re saying but I can’t form a logical reply! STFU! Just STFU!”
Simping for a billionaire and you don’t even understand survivor bias. Hilarious.

Down with Bezos!
How many others tried this. You seem to have the idea that Amazon was the only one.
You’re taking for fact a tale from the legend of Amazon. A legend that isn’t faithful to reality.

I think many people imagined a dystopian corporate-tech future, most weren’t psychopathic enough to try to achieve it.
Take my angry upvote. Hate that you’re right this instance.
