I’m thinking of buying Hero Quest again. I like that the rules aren’t too complicated.

I was thinking of how people used to play chess years ago by sending each other their next move by mail. Maybe we could do something similar with IRC and a webcam to livestream the table. Anybody interested? I’m in the UTC+0 timezone. In theory, you won’t need a board to play but practice could be different.

It would be easy to set up a chat room on libera.chat. I mention IRC specifically because I’m not into Discord. It’s too busy and makes the fans on my laptop very loud.

Edit: I’m going to have to put my participation in this on hold. I did get a webpage set up that streams from my web camera. I’m also in the middle of getting the page to show the most recent frame grab of the last state of the board in case the camera happens to be off. But, I’ve realised that my cameras are all built into devices (smartphone and desktop monitor). So while it tests well, I can’t angle these in a way that frames the board best, and I need my phone for other things most of the time :) I’ll come back to this if I ever end up with two dedicated cameras (one from above and one at a side angle).

Just in case you’re unaware, Tabletop Simulator is a game that exists, and allows playing board games with remote friends without the need for a convoluted webcam setup (or a physical board). Maybe the convoluted setup is the point, in which case, more power to you, but if you just want to play the game, consider this instead.

There’s also Vassal Engine, it’s a bit janky but it’s also free and open source.

Thank you for that. I did come across tabletop simulator on my search but after exploring it I think I prefer the physical board (if not the effort of setting up the camera).

I’ve never played it before, but I like the idea and am also interested if it is possible to make it work! I am also in UTC+0.

Happy to try and learn the rules beforehand, although I can’t promise I’ll be any good :D

The best thing about Hero Quest is the Barbarian, look at the muscularity.

I’m intrigued. I’ve never used IRC before but Im sure I could make it happen.

Are you thinking of playing real time sessions or send your move when you’re able throughout the day?

You can use IRC via a web browser these days so it’s even easier than in the 90’s. You’d start here https://web.libera.chat/ and I’m happy to explain anything you need help with! And as for the sessions, I was thinking we could do both: if we can agree on a time, maybe do an hour in real-time together, but otherwise just leave messages in the chat when possible. I’d update the board based on that.
