The prequels are a story about a young man falling into fascism because the liberal institution had become aristocratic and stopped caring about people who did not perfectly fit into it’s fold, and the fascists sold him a lie based on his fear. When you watch the movies with that framing, they’re still bad but some of the decisions make sense.

It’s a shame he couldn’t pull it off, Lucas definitely had a good idea, it was just accompanied by a lot of bad ones.
